Can't set my cam back

My timing is off how do i reset it. I thing i took the intake cam around to many revolutions.

Take off the intake side, then set the #1 cylinder to top dead center. When you install the cams, set them close to where the marks should be. Alignment is critical when you put the belt on. After the belt is on turn the engine two revolutions by hand and recheck/reset your marks. Every time you reset it, turn the engine again and recheck marks.

Did you go "by the book" on the timing belt installation procedure? Crtitical on these engines that the timing is spot on, and the tension is set correct
When installing the belt, the exhaust cam sprocket mark should be 1/2 notch below the mark on the intake sprocket, until belt is installed. Then you turn the exhaust cam back to line its mark with the intake cam's mark. This is to remove slack from the belt. Now both cams should have their marks facing each other, while the crank is at TDC with its notch lining up with the arrow on the oil pump case. And the arrows on the cam sprockets should both be facing up.(Belt installation: start at crankshaft, then around water pump sprocket, idler pulley, camshaft sprockets, and then around tensioner pulley. Now is when you turn exhaust cam back ( 1/2 notch) to line up with intake cam, removing slack.)
The procedure for the tensioner is dependent on whether you have the mechanical tensioner or the hydraulic tensioner. On the hydraulic tensioner, you will have a pin (like a small allen wrench, very small) placed into the hole on the tensioner to hold the plunger in until installed, and again, by the book, once you have the tension set correctly, you should be able to remove and install the pin easily back into the hole after rotating the crank a couple of revolutions. If the pin will not go back into the hole, take the tension off, and do it again till it is right. The procedure for setting the tension is a bit involved, but here it is: install tensioner to block, do not tighten. Using a torque wrench on the tensioner pulley, apply 250 inch lbs. of torque to the tensioner pulley.Move tensioner up against the tensioner pulley bracket and tighten the fasteners to 275 inch lbs., with torque still applied to the tensioner pulley. Remove tensioner plunger pin. Tension is correct when the pin can be removed and replaced easily.
I hope this helps you. I just finished a timing belt on a Chrysler v-6 Cirrus. Had to do it twice before I got it right, but it works well.

Timing specs on 2002 grand am 2.2 liter dual over head cam wont to know how to time the top 2 cam

rotate the engine till the crankshaft sprocket mark lines up with the second silver link on the chain, should @ the 5:00 position. on the right sprocket or the intake sprocket align the intake diamond with the copper link should set at the 2:00 position, and the triangle on the exhaust sprocket should line up with the other silver link in the chain approxamately at the 10:00 position. Once you get it in time, it is a good idea to put a bar on the crank and turn the engine over one complete revolution, just to make sure you got it timed right. hope this helps

You did it the right way. If you tried to make a full cam revolution you would have hit the pistons with the valves. Put the lower timing cover and crank pulley back on. If the cam marks are aligned right and the mark on the lower timing cover lines up with the mark on the crank pulley, you're good to go.

Need timing marks for 2002 ford explorer 4.0 engine. trying 2 check timing chain. any one know specs

There are no marks on this one. There is a special tool set to align camshafts ($900). The best you can do is to bring #1 cyl to TDC compression with both cam(valve) covers off. #5 cyl should have lobes at equal opening, exhaust just closing and intake just opening.. #1 cyl cam lobes should each be diametrically opposed to the positions of #5. If cams need to be moved, there is no registration of gear onto cam. Just loosen bolt holding gear and move cam. Retighten bolt. Roll thru 2 crank revolutions and check cam timing again.Simple.

if you mean the timing chain then on your crank gear and your cam gear there will be a mark on each sometimes they look like a dot the dots need to look like this for perfect timing ( . . ) this will be there closest position. Your crank turns once all the way around (360 degree) and your cam gear will do two complete revolutions to the one of the crank gear. so when you set your marks as above when you turn the crank one half turn the mark on the crank gear will be at the bottom and at the same time your cam gear will have made one complete revolution, so when you turn the crank another half turn your cam would have turned again a complete revolution and the two marks should be at their closet point again.

the timing marks on your crank and cam crank need to be one on top of the other if you understand what i mean. anyway if this is done correctly, your cam should make two revolutions to one of the crank thus after one full revolution of the crankshat gear your camshaft gear should do 2 revolutions and you timing marks should be next to one another

Timing gear set

That is a dual overhead cam engine. On the oil pump housing there is an arrow cast into the housing. Line the arrow on the crank pulley up with the arrow on the oil pump housing, that will set your crankshaft in time. Next you'll need to set your camshafts. This is the procedure for doing that......the exhaust cam gear (nearest the firewall) has markings on it that say "2.4L" on one side and "up^" on the other side. On the left side of the gear is a notch on the tooth. This notch MUST be set at 3:30 and the intake cam at EXACTLY 9:00. Once you've installed the timing belt and you rotate the tensioner to "tighten", the offsetting of the exhaust cam will match up with the intake cam. And presto!!! your timing is now set. Make sure you turn the crank sprocket TWO complete revolutions and verify your timing marks.
