SOURCE: Nissan vanette not starting from cold

My vanette had exactly the same problem yesterday. The glow plugs have a timer and a relay. I think that if the light on the dash goes on and off as normal then its probably the relay not the timer. So I have replaced the relay (£50 nissan dealer only) which is located in the center console below the radio/heater controls. Until its really cold again tomorrow I wont know if its really cured it but I'm fairly certain that will be it.

its very easy, takes maby 10min, there are hidden screws under the cougar symbols on the door, and under the black circles on the carpeted part of the door, they all just pop off, then there are a few on the ouside rim of the door 2 on each side i think, it might require a little jiggling but the car is pretty simple

SOURCE: How do I remove the dashboard from my 2000 Chevy Astro Van?

Paul is right you can go to radio shack or autozone schucks or any parts store and ask for the removal tool it cost $20.00 tops. Trust me you don't want to undo the dash as the air bag could detonate if you shorted the two wires that can control it and it could kill you.

Ive had the pump overhauled by professionals, fitted pump onto van, timed all correct and theres no fuel getting to injectors, also keeps blowing 10amp fuse on glowplugs

Did you prime the system ? Fill the fuel filters with fuel ! For the glow plugs find a wiring diagram an do a voltage drop test on the circuit ! May have a shorted glow plug or the control module. You can find videos on you tube on testing ,probably .

Hello try to measure the voltage at the glowplug wire with ignition on.

It must be at between 5 and 12 volts.
They need to be changed at 60000 to 80000 km.
Because at this mileage they are normaly burned out.
Each plug can drag 8 to 10 amps, when on.

If no reading volts, the glow plug relay, and maybe the plugs must be renewed.
There should also be a big fuse at the firewall, check that also.
Follow the glow plug wire, where it goes to.
Does the glow plug lamp light up in the dashboard ??
Are the relay clicking ???

Check also for blown fuses, resistors, or broken wires.

If you change the glowplugs, DO NOT overtighten them, not more than 15 NM !!!

Good luck

Replace glow plug on audi a3 2005

If this is a Diesel engine, the glowplugs would be in a position like a sparkplug. You can replace them as you wish, or replace only the bad one. To determine if a glowplug is bad, you would remove it as you do a sparkplug on a gas engine.

With several of the glowplugs removed, you would place a battery jumper cable on one end of the glowplug, while being careful not to damage its threads. That cable would be connected to the NEG battery cable. The remaining cable would be placed on the Positive(+) terminal of the battery and then you would briefly tough the POS cable to the top of the glowplug.

Do this briefly. You can melt the part. But you need to see if the glowplug will glow. Often the problem with glowplugs is the Timer box. This is the box from where the wires come from to go to the glowplugs.

If you have a glowplug staying dark, or failing to glow well, then it is a bad glowplug. Each should glow the same. That is why you check several at a time to tell what is normal.

I work on Ford diesels and do not know what plastic covers you may have. So just follow the wires that are not on the fuel injectors and that is all you can possibly do.

1999 A4: glow plug replacement...

Its very similar to replacing a spark plug. Unless you have a scheduled maintenance interval you just leave them alone.

If you are having problems you test each glowplug in the following way. Remove the glowplug from the engine. Get car jumper cables and put the negative wire on the casing away from the threads. Touch the positive cable to the top structure of the glowplug causing sparks. This is of course having the battery cables connected to the battery appropriately.

You can melt the glowplug. But if the glowplug resists heating up, resists glowing, it is bad. Just ordinary small gauge wiring will melt. You need jumper cables and even they can get hot. Thats all truckers have done for the big rigs.

Ford Mondao diesel(2004). Engine will not start by the key but will start with a push. History of fault. Turbo was cutting out under heavy accelarition so changed fuel filter. The old filter was...

You may have another clogged filter. If there is anyway this could be on backwards check that. On gas models filters go inline and have a direction arrow. Make sure it is the correct filter.

Now you need to check the glow plugs. They are the heart of the cold start system. When you turn the key you have a wait interval. This is a timer interval that heats the glow plugs. If this is not working you can not start the engine on its own, but you can push start it.

You can test the glow plugs by removing them and hooking jumper cables to each. The top gets Positive and the bottom gets Negative. Put the Negative away from the threads. This is an Arcing, fast test. You can melt the things. But that is how you determine if they work. The faster they glow the better it works.

Now use a test lamp or Voltmeter on the wire end that connects to each glowplug. Turn on the key and see if you have power at each wire before the timer times out. If no power, then timer is bad.

Most likely the water toasted the glowplugs because the water would not affect the timer.
