Question about Lexus IS 250

2 Answers

My wife just too delivery on a 2009 Lexus IS250 with AWD that is pretty jittery on the road. On bumps it is brutal, while on a smooth highway it drives beautifully. It seems overly stiff. We have taken tire pressure down from 39 pounds in the back to 34 on the recco of the dealer, which helped considerably. Is there anything else that could help?

I haven't driven it but my wife said it had poor pick-up at speed on the highway. Might that point to Bepositive being right?

I note that even reviews on Consumer Reports say the normal ride is jiggly. If there is nothing that the dealer finds to be wrong, is it possible to do some other things that might help?

I will try to drive it tomorrow and see what I think.

Hi - I drove it and think are right. It handles beautifully but is tough on Boston streets. Regarding suspension, what would one focus on - shocks? Or more? Got a sense for what that might run?

Could different tires make a big difference? They have sport tires which are very thin.

    thanks,

    Jim

From everything that I could find on the 09 Lexus IS 250 it just has a sporty (aka stiff) ride which helps in handling when driving it like a sports car, but at the same time it can make for a rough ride for normal everyday driving.  Unless you are willing to drop some serious $ to change out the suspension there really isn't much else that you can do to help the ride.  i would say that you can't take the tire pressure down any more than you have.  Hope this helps.  Thanks for using FixYa!

    Jim,

Sorry it took me a while to get back to you.  As far as the shocks go if you wanted to get something tha wasn't so stiff you would have to go to your Lexus dealer to get them because if you don't you would probably be voiding parts of your warranty if you put aftermarket parts on there.  That being said, it would probably cost you quite a bit of money say around $1500-$2000 to get it done.  Even if you decided you wanted to go that route I don't know how much of a difference that would make.  The Lexus IS250 is designed to be a sporty car and it will take a lot to get away from that.  I would think that a different tire might be a better way to go but again to throw away perfectly good tires just to lay out close to $800-$1200 for some new ones I don't know if that would be worth it to you.  Like you were saying, the low profile tires are some of what makes your ride so bumpy and you might be able to get away with putting something not quite as thin on there but you aren't going to be able to get away from a low profile tire all together because again the car was designed for that type of tire so there is a limited amount of space in the wheel wells for them.  I personally wouldn't put down the money to change the ride because I don't think it will be worth the $$$ for the difference it will make.  My final suggestion, if you are bent on changing something (which you may or may not be), would be to call the dealer and price a softer set of shocks and then just wait a while on the tires and when it comes time for a new set go with something that isn't as sporty.  Good luck with your decision and let me know if you have any more question.  I know the roads can be rough up there in the NE but man I bet that car will handle like a dream!!!  Thanks for letting me have the opportunity to help you with this and your honest rating on my helpfullness is greatly appreciated.  Thanks for using FixYa!

Few possibilities:

start checking voltage outputs of the coil/paks and ignition and emmisions controls sensors ,also check ,quite possibly sticking egr valve or egr solenoid .if its a new vehicle kindly get it checked for free from a service center .

thanks.do not forget to accept the solution.keep updated.

A bent rim cannot cause your vehicle to vibrate while stopped. What you describe seems more likely to be an engine misfire or possibly a drive train problem.

On North American IS250 it is to the right of the steering wheel below the ignition button. There should be two switches ECT and TRAC side by side
