Question about 2002 Mercury Villager
Sounds like the wrong sensor for the car. The correct sensor would also have 3 wires: a signal wire, a ground, and a voltage, reference voltage wire. The 4 wire sensor sounds like it might be a Heated Oxygen Sensor, not applicable on your car.

Match up the black wires (signal ground), the gray wire from the car to the white wire on the sensor (this is the signal wire), and the white wires on the sensor to the blue and yellow wires on the car (these are the heater wires and it doesn't matter which of the white wires on the sensor mate to the blue or yellow wires).

SOURCE: Do you know wiring sequence
4-white=heater.-- --- White wires are for the heater - the heater is not polarity sensitive, it's just a resistive element. The black wire is the sensor output. The gray wire is the sensor return, or ground. -------------------- O2 sensor black(signal +) goes to Black on wiring harness.-------
O2 sensor gray(signal -) goes to White on wiring harness.--------
O2 sensor white(heater) goes to Blue/Yellow stripe on wiring harness (this doesn't matter if it matches).--------
O2 sensor white(heater) goes to Yellow/Blue stripe on wiring harness (this doesn't matter if it matches).---------- ------------------------ This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.
