Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

2004 silverado 5.3. It started a few times today fine (-35 c temp) but it seemed like it wasn't getting enough fuel. I put in a can of sea foam but that didn't seem to help. When I came home tonight, the electrical system seemed to bog a bit (lights/fan dimmed) and once I was in the driveway it died and wouldn't start again.

Have you change your fuel I have heard if you use a higher octane then go back to stranded that this problem will or can occur I suggest 95 octane 98 is as high as u want to go also make sure there is no air leaks

Sounds like your battery is on the way out. Have a load test done on battery & voltage check on alternator. If all works well once it starts, I'd bet on the battery, but load test will confirm, which they will do for free usually if your buying the battery from them.

SOURCE: 1997 Neon dies, starts after electric fuel pump relay swapped

Hello, I would assume this is your fuel pump inside your tank. I would first however do some basics like a general tuneup. For starters I would replace your spark plugs and wires, rotary cap and button and check your fuses. Run some injector cleaner through your system. You know quick simple cheap things before you get to the fuel pump inside the gas tank which can be kinda expensive. The warm up then dies can be caused by, "blownout or fouled," spark plugs. I hope this gives you a general direction in which to go. A sidenote is that coil packs do not normally run an igntion code and I for one do not like them becuase they are expensive.

SOURCE: hard to start cold but once running is ok

I believe you have a throtle body correct? IF so you have poor fuel pressure, plugged filter of injector. If by some miracle you have a carberated engine the the fuel is leaking from the bowl. Get a carb rebuild kit.

Acceleration and/or fuel problem ???

As crazy as it sounds take a bike tire pump and blow from the intake back toward the tank. We had an issue like that, air back flow solved it. Sounds crazy I know. Maybe install a clear inline fuel filter and look for debris or air in the line. Also maybe a split in brittle plastic fuel line back around tank. Hope this may help.

Check your Fuel Pressure. You may have a bad pump or the intake sock is plugged.

How much gas is in the tank? Is the gas old? If you only have a few gallons in the tank i would advise you to put 5 gals of fresh gas and a bottle of sea foam gas addititve.. if you gas is old it starts to turn to varnish and gets sticky, it smells really bad too.Go to auto zone or wal mart to get the sea foam and add it to a five gallon gas can then add your fresh gas into you car tank..You can also get the sea foam in a spraycan form that you can spray directly into your air intake..Can you hear if the fuel pump is running? Take your gas cap off and put your ear up to the filler tube to see if you can hear you fuel pump working, it sounds like a high pitch whinning sound..Have someone turn the key on while you listen for it..

Thee new fuels today go bad after around 3 weeks because of the ethonol content. Put a can of Sea Foam in the gas tank see if that helps clean it out. Best bet is to drain the tank put new fuel in it with a can of Sea Foam, then give it a good long run until the tank is empty. Re fill the tank and put the correct amount of Stabil in the with the gas, this will stop the gas from turning into sugar and it works for years.
Good luck

You could have a bad pump motor in your fuel pump. You will hear the "hum" of the pump motor but it won't continuously feed enough pressue to the system.
When you prime it the engine will draw enough to run for a bit then quit. They usually dry out if not kept full and sunfire fuel pumps are noted for this type of failure.
Try a used one for about 75 bucks. My kids Sunfire did exactly the same thing.

Hard start wont run more than a few minutes

sounds like the air bypass valve may be stuck ,try pulling off a small vaccum line. the valve is used instead of a choke plate. when engine is cold it bleeds air around the throttle plate raising the idle.
