1984 CHEVROLET SCOTTDALE 10 PICKUP AUTOMATIC

When driving or engine running, engine races without switcing into next gear up until about 40 mph, then it jumps or kicks into gear when it reaches 40 mph. Im assuming its a transmission problem. Is this called a skipping transmission? Whats the best way to fix? Should I pour a solution into it to stop skip or have rebuilt? It runs excellent wants it kicks into gear, its just the racing engine that concerns me. Im not sure if its the engine or the transmission thats the problem. Can you give me some advice on how to fix problem. thanks

Has any work been done to the carbuator recently? if so the kickdown cable might need adjusting. is it "skipping" under normal or hard acceleration? under normal odds are your tranni is going out. under hard acceleration again kickdown cable.

Sounds like overdrive or the torque converter is going out. The torque converter goes into lock up then the trans goes into overdrive.
Your owners manual should have a diagram of the engine compartment showing the dipstick. Is the check engine light on ?

1984 ram 150 225 engine 4speed starter?; at first

have you tried to roll the pickup and put it in first gear because you have to roll the pickup to a certain speed like 10 mph or so and then put it into first gear should start the pickup. If this does not work that you have serious engine problems with that old pickup and might be inside the tramsmission problem. So let me know if this works out

Not Ready for Smog test

it is not how many miles but the type of driving.

here is a OBD2 drive cycle test.

Generic OBD II "Drive Cycle" Most OBD II ("On-Board Diagnostics II") diagnostic monitors will run at some time during normal operation of the vehicle.
However, to satisy all of the different Trip enable criteria and run all of the OBD II diagnostic monitors, the vehicle must be driven under a variety of conditions. The following drive cycle will (theoretically) allow all monitors to run on (??) vehicle. (Note: Drive cycle specifics vary by vehicle!)
  1. Ensure that the fuel tank is between 1/4 and 3/4 full.
  2. Start cold (below 86°F /30°C) and warm up until engine coolant temperature is at least 160° F (typically requires at least one minute; up to 3 minutes).
  3. Accelerate to 40-55 MPH at 25% throttle and maintain speed for five minutes.
  4. Decelerate without using the brake (coast down) to 20 MPH or less, then stop the vehicle. Allow the engine to idle for 10 seconds, turn the key off, and wait one minute.
  5. Restart and accelerate to 40-55 MPH at 25% throttle and maintain speed for two minutes.
  6. Decelerate with using the brake [or the clutch!] by coasting down to 20 MPH or less, then stop the vehicle. Allow the engine to idle for 10 seconds, turn the key off, and wait one minute.

Transmission shifts early (Is this normal?)

the reason it might be shifting so early is because of the gear ratio in the rear end of the truck. it is common in the 2 wheel drive basic model pickup because they were designed to work not travel.

Hyundai Elantr 2002, automatic. When the car running, I sense changing gear (at ~30 mph) and there is jerking. Then the engine light comes on. Then the speed pickup is bad. suggest what could be wrong....

I had something similar happen. My check engine light never came on but i did experience the jerking between the 30 and 40 mph mark. Have your fuel injector checked to see if its dirty. Also have your fuel lines checked to see if you have water in it and have them check the transmission fluid. its possible you can be low. When I had the problem i did all 3 of these things. My car does not **** anymore. Also another problem could be your valve cover gasket.

1984 s10 2.8 manual trans. flywheel causes engine to vibrate

no should be same engine. check your engine mounts and tranny mount. how bad a vibration? sometimes after installing engine the trans gets shifted around and if mount was worn it will allow it to hit crossmeber and vibrate.
