Question about 2002 Dodge Neon

1 Answer

I have a 2002 Dodge Neon that will idle at a higher rate than normal when I start the car. It will do this for about 5 seconds and then return to a lower idle but will diesel on me. When the car is taken out of park to drive (automatic transmission) it will begin to idle at a higher rate and then come down but still diesels.

It is a bad idle control valve. this is located on the throttle body. not the center pin sensor but the one to the side of center it has two torque screws holding it in. sometimes removing it and cleaning it will help. the cost for a new one is quite crazy. mine does the same thing. just a good cleaning once a month solves it for me.

95 Dodge Neon 2.0 4cyl The car starts fine, and even drives fine, but for some reason while idling, if I so much as touch the accelerator with my fingertip, the car revs up real high for about 5 seconds,...

sounds like you are having problems with the throttle valve cable trying to stick. check to see with the engine turned off to see by pressing down on acclerator pedal to the floor and releasing it quickly. if it shows to be slow in returning then you need to replace cable on throttle body. hope this will help you!!!

Starting a 2002 Dodge Neon in extremely cold weather

The best is to turn the key on to the run position for a few seconds then back off then back to run and then start. This cycles the fuel pump and sends a good supply of fuel up to the injectors. Also do not rev the engine excessively until it has warmed up to allow oil to flow good.
Good luck, dont forget to rate.

2002 Neon--Car 'chugs' a bit, especially while A/C on/idle

Remove the Spark PLUGS, check the Condition, and AIR gap. If things are suspect, crank the engine to expel the debris,
out of the plug ports, and install new plugs.
I use and recommend BOSCH plugs, for your Model type, they do not have to be Air Gapped, and are virtually maintenance free for life.

My neon 2002 send codes p0500, p0700 and p1684 when i stop in a light the revolutions will go from 900 to 500 and it will start shaking if i hit the gas pedal it recovers to 900rpm

i had the same problem at stop lights.

i had the computer flashed to the latest version at the dealer for free, and the shaking is gone and idle is back to normal. i was kicking the car back to normal idle just like you.

(although, i'm not sure if there's a deeper problem or not. now i'm experiencing sluggish acceleration and sometimes have difficulty accelerating over 60mph. sometimes fine, sometimes not. so you might run into that next...)

2005 dodge neon throttle body sucks air until car warms up.

TRY SPRAYING SOME CARB AND CHOKE CLEANER INSIDE THE THROTTLE BODY WHILE WIPING IT WITH A CLOTH RAG. PAPER TOWEL WILL NOT BE STRONG ENOUGH. IF THIS DOESN'T SOLVE THIS THEN CHANGE THE IDLE SPEED SENSOR. HOPE THIS HELPS. BEST OF LUCK. THANKS FOR AN HONEST RATING AND FOR USING FIX-YA. PLEASE KEEP ME POSTED.

might want to try charging the battery for a while on a battery charger.
usually when a vehicle does this, its because the alternator is trying to charge the battery more then normal causing the motor to rev higher.
