Could be alot of things. My car's alternator went bad and as the battery died, it started to backfire. Try testing the battery or jumping it off. If it will start then, your alternator is most likely bad. Try this and let me know if it helps :)

As with any no start problem, have you checked for spark at the plugs and normal fuel pressure at the injectors ?
Does it crank with normal compression ?

Does the engine crank and not start or does it not turn over at all? You likely have an ignition problem either pointing to the distributor ignition module.

I was driving home going 55 and I heard the engine kinda pop and it died. It will not start back up?

I dont know what type of vehicle it is but if the starter motor still turns engine over but it sounds different its a possible timing chain or belt

96 eclipse need more info..

This sounds like the timing belt is shot. Remove the distributor cap, have your helper crank the engine. Is the rotor turning?? If not, then it is the timing belt. Some engines are rather forgiving when the belt breaks, some will get bent valves. Frankster016
