I took the car to a Dodge dealer service center, they reset it, It came back a few weeks later, I think they just reset it instead of looking for the root cause. My real question is whether or not the air bag in inoperative when this light is on.Please do not answer this with a guess, only if you are a qualified technician, thanks in advance.

The most common cause of this is the rotating contact is broken under the steering wheel, this flexible contact connects the airbag to the airbag control module

there is no other option...as long as the light is on there is a chance the airbag will either not work in an accident or it may deploy without warning. how many miles do you have on the vehicle??? there is a chance if you contact chrysler customer relations they may assist in the repairs.

it is the clockspring it is nothing to worry about i would get some cat 5 wire coil it up and wire it in there because the clockspring is very expensive part in have replace them using cat 5 wire and never had any problem after

replace the clock-spring ribbon contact under the steering wheel, that is the problem, u have lost the connection due to a broken ribbon contact.

ok the most common guess would be the rotating flat ribbon contact under the steering wheel that provides a moving connection to the airbag from the steering column wiring. the part is called a clock-spring contact, it is coiled up and winds and un winds as needed when u turn the wheel, they are a very common problem in all airbag equipped cars, no matter the make or model, they all use a similar part.
