I lifted the car and the power steering came back but it now makes a "whining" noise. Still need to replace the pump?

Check the fluid first. It will whine if no or low fluid is in it. Is it leaking fluid?

You might try and put in some Hi Tach steer repair power steering and rack and pinion formula. I have had good luck with this.

Power steering pump shaft broken again

When you place the wheel in a hard lock position ,the power steering pump relies on the pressure by-pass valve to operate instead of the valves in the steering box to open and allow the pressure to by-pass back to the reservoir.. When you hit hard lock and you hear the motor load up just ease on the turn and the pump will operate as designed. The turn will still be the same -just that the pump is not under full load . Breaking the shaft is a sign of excessive load and a misaligned pulley so check that the belt is directly in line and the pump is square to the belt line.

more than likely it is just low on power steering fluid. system might have air in it now. so after fill power steering unit to proper level driver the car and check fluid level again. and add more if needed . I believe car should have motor running for when checking fluid, same as transmission.

2002 trailblazer, power steering went out yesterday. I checked reservoir and it was empty so i completely topped off with a new quart. about ten minutes later it went out again and when i checked, the...

You'll need a helper for this. Refill the reservoir.
**Keep the blazer in park with the E brake on.**
It might help if you raise the front end onto axle stands. Run the engine so the power steering is active. Get you helper to turn the steering from lock to lock, hard left to hard right and back again. Do this 2 or 3 times. While they do this have a look at all the pipe work you can see, WEAR SAFETY GOGGLES if your under the car. Working the steering will show where the system is leaking.

Any brand of Power steering fluid is okay to use. You might want to get some with seal conditioners in it, it may help slow or stop any leaks your having.
