Well,

I fill you in what I learned today. I have a 2005 S-Type Jaguar and the dealer sayed it needed new pads in the rear. They wanted $300 just for the pads and another $150 or so to install. That $450 bucks to replace the brake pads only on the rear of the car. And of course, the extended warranty doesn't cover this, so I said no thanks. I found the best brake pads from Napa for $52. I purchased them through my brothers shop- saved a little. I done lots of brake pad replacements over the years, but not on a new car like the Jaguar. Well they are a little different and the frist one took me awhile . Here is the trick. 1) MAke sure the parking brake is off and you do this by starting the car, stepping on the normal brake and then pushing the parking break lever down while shutting off the car. 2) You then take the tire off, use jack stands to ensure safety.3) Take off brake callipers, 2 bolts and the brake pads should just fall off.4) take the anti-rattle plate off the old pads by prying it off carefully with a tiny screw driver- clean and then install on the new ones. 5) Here I release the the valve for the brake fluid. I did not want to damage the system if the fluid went back into the system when I retracted the calliper. You use some fluid, but you can add when finished. 6)You either need one of those brake calliper tools that you push the calliper in with and If you don't have the trick new one with the keys to turn the brake calliper cylinder, you can get by with the old version like I did and use a pair of channel locks to turn counter clockwise, while continuing to turn the tool. The cylinder needss pressure on it while you turn. This will put in in the proper place. 7) Ensure you have the slots up and down so that the pin in the pad fits up into the cylinder. you know this is correct when you have it perfect vertical and center within the calliper. Pay attention when taking off! 8) Set the brake pads in their proper place and then slide the calliper over them. IT should go over freely or else you need to turn more on the cylinder. 9) Tighten the bolts and replace the tire and you are done. Next side!

Your A8 and new shape A6s with electric parking brakes require an electric input to the vehicle to tell it to wind back the pistons/pads. Main dealers have this on their diagnostic equipment. You can also purchase after market tools that just do this operation, heres an example

I have only ever used a main dealer machine so im not sure how good an after market one will be. Im not aware of anyway of doing the job without an electrical input to wind back the pads, the motors are very powerful so I wouldnt reccommend trying it manually. Hope this helps.

The bulbs do not need to be replaced! The answer to this problem is believe it or not in the turn signal lever, or multi-function switch. It is extremely common on these cars, and usually mis-diagnosed. Try this before going any farther. Back the vehicle up to a wall, or have a person stand behind the car, and pull the turn signal lever slightly towards you as if you were switching between hi and low beams. I guarantee that when you put just a little pressure on the lever your brake lights will work. If you want the problem fixed, you need to have the switch (and lever arm) replaced from inside the steering column, and you need someone to remove the airbag to do this. The switch is roughly $200 from an aftermarket parts store. If you learn to drive your car and just know that when you brake you can pull back on the lever to make the lights work great, I did for a few years in mine. But I guarantee that is the answer to your problem

Hi Alberts73,
The caliper piston has to be turned clockwise as it is compressed. If not,it will not retract. This will allow the park brake to reset. If you have only pressed the caliper in with a "C" clamp,you may have damaged the mechanism inside the caliper. If this has happened,you will need to replace them.The OTC #206-026 is the tool for turning the caliper back into the bore. I hope this helps,if you need more information,drop me a line. How to put rear brakes on


Remove the caliper mounting bolts and remove the caliper. Replace brake pads as necessary. Special tool is required to retract caliper piston to fit over new pads. (see picture below)
Retract piston in caliper using special tool to rotate clockwise and make sure the notch in the piston is aligned properly so the tab on the inner pad will fit in properly.
Reinstall caliper assembly and caliper mounting bolts.

How to retract brake caliper piston?


Hi, if this is a front caliper that is still on the rotor, I pry between the rotor and rear brake pad to push the piston in. I usually have to pull on the caliper a bit to get it retracted enough to get a screwdriver in between. If the caliper is already off the rotor, I leave the old inside pad on the piston and put a large c-clamp over the caliper to push on the pad and retract the piston. If this is a rear disk caliper or if you have any questions, please reply.

Which way do you turn the piston clockwise or counter clockwise to retract the piston in when installing new brake pads on a 2006 Ford freestyle?


Clockwise-on the rear
I would open the bleeder valve first, push piston in,then screw parking brake in.
You need to flush your brakes every couple years,anyway.
After you install new pads,ratchet brake up by hand.

How do I retract the rear brake caliper piston


usually with a special tool you can borrow at autozone. because the rear brakes are usually the parking brake. you have to screw them back in. if there is a cross pattern or some type of groove in the piston will confirm this.

CANT GET THE PISTON TO RETRACT ON THE CALIPER


With rear brakes the caliper piston must screwed in. It usually has a parking brake mechanism that has to screw out as the pad wears down. When you install a new fat pad, the piston won't retract with normal pressure of a clamp but must be screwed back in on the parking brake screw. This can be done with a long nose pliers but tools are made just for the purpose. I hope this helps.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the rear wheels.
  2. If equipped, disconnect the brake pad wear sensor from the harness.
  3. Counterhold the lower sliding pin using a thin open-end wrench and remove the caliper-to-sliding pin hex bolt.
  4. Pivot the caliper upward or if necessary remove the upper caliper-to-sliding pin hex bolt.
  5. Using a brake caliper retraction tool, select the appropriate sized piston press arbor and install the tool onto the brake caliper. Following the tool manufacturer's recommendations, use the tool to rotate the caliper piston clockwise as it is pressed into the brake caliper housing, until it is fully retracted.

  1. Clean the brake caliper and all sliding surfaces. With the caliper piston pressed fully back into the caliper housing, check for leaking fluid and damaged dust boots.
  2. If equipped, install a new brake pad wear sensor in the pad if the plastic part has been worn through on the old sensor. New sensors are not required unless the wire inside the plastic part has been exposed.
  3. Lubricate the slider bolts with approved brake grease.
  4. Install the brake pads onto the bracket assembly, and then carefully lower the caliper over the caliper mount. Check and make sure that the pad springs are correctly seated.
  5. Replace all removed caliper-to-sliding pin bolts and torque to:
  6. 1990-97 Passat models: 25 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)
  7. 1998-00 Passat models: 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
  8. If equipped, connect the brake wear sensor wire to the harness. Check for a good connection as most problems with the sensor circuit are caused by faulty connections. Check that the wire is held by the loop in the dust cover and the connector is held at the clips.
  9. Install the wheels and hand tighten the lug bolts. Lower the vehicle carefully until the tires begin to contact the surface and torque the lug bolts to specification in a crisscross pattern to:
  10. M12 x 1.5 lug bolts: 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
  11. M14 x 1.5 lug bolts: 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm)

How to assemble the rear right calipers around the pads?


if you are having trouble retracting the caliper, push and turn on face of piston with pliers (rotate Clockwise) this retractes the piston thus allowing the pads to fit on the calipers. The piston does not retract on its own because of the automatic adjusting brakes.
