Hello bvkdw...are you talking about a backfire...literally... as in out the intake or an afterfire, from the exhaust? Backfires are rare so i will assume you ment afterfire. Scan for trouble codes, afterfires are from incorrect air/fuel mixtures, the ECM is likely receiving false information, the air intake sensor would cause this. Check for vacuum leaks and the 02 sensor.

I have a 2002 subaru out back it shut down on me so i put a code reader on it and it said camshaft sensor so i changed it and it still wo,t start and i checked it again and it still says cam shaft sen

Do you have the four cylinder or the six cylinder? The six cylinder has 2 camshaft sensors - one for each camshaft. If you are still getting the code, you may have replaced the wrong one.

2002 outback engine problem

looks like you need a good tune up its a little early for this engine but i have seen alot of bad plug wires this year. so at least plugs and wires.
i think this should cure your problem
