Question about 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee
After stopping and startng car only drives few feet,makes whirring sound
Transmission might be fried. One suggestion, did you try putting it in 4WD and trying that? I had a Jeep come in, same thing, wont move, ended up being a blown transfer case. Put it in 4 hi or low, and see if it will go into gear and move. Long shot, but worth a try.

Alarm Module Reset Procedure
NOTE: This information applies to a Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS) that was armed when the battery was disconnected and reconnected.
When the armed VTSS senses that the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, it enters its power-up mode. In the power-up mode the alarm system remains armed following a battery failure or disconnect. If the VTSS was armed prior to a battery disconnect or failure, the system will have to be actively or passively disarmed following a battery reconnection.
The power-up mode will also apply if the battery goes dead while the system is armed and battery jump-starting is attempted. The engine no-run feature will prevent the engine from starting until the alarm system has been actively or passively disarmed.
Passive disarming of the Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS) occurs when the vehicle is unlocked using the key to unlock either front door or the lift gate. Active disarming of the VTSS occurs when the vehicle is unlocked by depressing the Unlock button of the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter.
Once the alarm has been activated (horn sounding, lights flashing, and the engine no-run feature), either disarming method will deactivate the alarm.
Depressing the Panic button (if equipped) on the RKE transmitter will also disarm the VTSS, but the horn will sound and the lights will flash for about three minutes as part of the Panic feature. The horn and lights can be stopped by pressing any of the RKE transmitter's buttons or driving the vehicle above 15 mph.

As I said, trans fluid keeps the internal components "alive"... Low fluid level can cause burning of internal clutches, premature hardening of seals (essential to proper transmission of fluid pressure) as well as lubrication of necessary gear components such as planetary gear set (which can cause whine etc. which you now have) All of these components rely upon a constant flow of fluid for both cooling and lubrication. Depending upon how low and how long these parts had interrupted fluid flow, directly influences how much damage was done. I take no joy in telling you that you may have damaged your unit, I'd be far happier if I could give you a quick, inexpensive fix. But based upon what you have said, If I was working hands-on with this problem, I would make the recommendation I've already made. There are pressure tests etc that can be done at a transmission shop to verify to some degree of certainty what is going on within your unit. Hopefully they may find something other than what I've said. At this point though, it is wise to have it checked out by a professional, before you become stranded at a time when you can least afford to be.

Use a engine scanner to pull codes, If none it sounds like the lock-up torque converter may not be disengaging at idle. Or you have a idle air control valve or TPS going bad, then repair codes by replacing failed sensor or shift control solenoid as needed. If no codes are present your transmission could have a internal failure. It's also been know that oil transmission fluid in the system will have a higher fluid retention causing the 2nd gear solenoid to stick causing the transmission to stay in second till the line pressure rises and drops back to first with a hard shift. Keep me posted be glad to get your transmission running again.

I have a 1996 Grand Cherokee - the same problem, except my interior lights flash on and off at the same time. Did you get your problem solved?
