If temp. is ok while driving and overheats while stopped, check to see if the cooling fans are coming on . For a quick check, start the car and turn the a/c on, if they don't, most likely bad fan motor(s), but check for power and ground, fuses and relay. And if you have over 100k on the car, I would still do the tstat and rad. cap as a preventative measure.

1995 taurus overheats while driving

Either Thermostat is sticking or water pump is going bad. Water pump usually spit out water through small hole of diaphram. Only way to check thermostat is pull it out. Then you might as well replace it.

make sure the fan is working, turn on the ac and see if the fan works,, if not, check the relay,, or the fuse,, next, check the thermostat,, they can become stuck and the water stops circulating causing the motor to heat up, try those 2 things ,, if the problem persists ,, message me back by replying to this feed, and I'll assist you more

Thermostat staying to cold not goin up to half way then dropin back down 'somtimes just stays at bottom

  • Sounds like your thermostat is stuck OPEN. Most the time a thermostat sticks closed and makes the vehicle overheat from lack of circulation. A thermostat can stick open also and you won't get any significant heat in the vehicle from over circulation. Might want to replace the thermostat.

  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

My 93 saturn sl1 is overheating. Could my thermostat be bad?

It could definitely be the thermostat. It is a cheap part to replace. If the car overheats while running down the road (not stop and go traffic), then it is almost certainly the thermostat.

96 tracker overheats at highway speeds temp ok at idle or low speed. Replaced water pump thermostat flushed rad checked hoses. any ideas?

Presurize system with radiator cap on to see if you are holding 10 to 13 LB pressure as high as 17 LB. Get new radiator cap for your radiator. Check for a slow leak at pump hose thermostat conection , is it wet ?

90 subaru legacy overheats, wheres the thrmostat

When a car overheats it's rarely the thermostat. They just don't go bad that often. If it overheats when you idle a lot, it's the fan and with electric fans, it's almost always the fan motor. But to find the thermostat, follow the top radiator hose to the engine and there it is.

The first thing to check after the thermostat is if the radiator cooling fan is still functioning.

92 isuzu rodeo overheating still

u says that u didn't replace the thermostat yet
Your thermostat is sticking. DO NOT DRIVE if the car overheats, you can do some serious engine damage, if you haven't done so already. Get the thermostat changed out immediately.

What happened is your thermostat is sticking. It was stuck and you saw it overheat (and should have stopped immediately). The added pressure from having a stuck thermostat pushes the fluild into the overflow.

The temperature may have gone back to normal if the thermostat "finally" opened. However, since the thermostat is sticking, it is unreliable and I would get it replaced.

Driving when the engine overheats can easily cause gaskets, such as the head gasket to fail and heads to warp. If this has occurred, you're looking at a new engine.
