Question about 2000 Dodge Caravan

1 Answer

2003 dodge caravan dies while driving, no power at all but all my dash lights light up and flash?

Changed the alternator, fuse box and computer and had it reprogrammed. Seemed to fix the problem for a day to two and then it died again while backing into my driveway. Heard a dinging bell 2 or 3 times and all the dash lights and headlights were flashing...there's no noise whatsoever when turning the key other than a humming noise in sync with the lights flashing

You'll need an OBD-II scanner tool to read the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) which will help in troubleshooting the problem. You can either rent or buy one (Sear, NAPA, Pep Boys, or Auto Zone). Or else have the car towed to your local Dodge dealership for repairs or to any local auto repair shop w/ ASE certified mechanic.
If you are able to pull the codes before going to a shop, post them and we can take it from there.

In the meantime Monica, please check the battery terminal connections; make sure they are not loose and check for any oxidation on the terminal posts for a bluish white corrosive deposits. If you do, remove the battery cables from their posts. If the insulation on the cables are cracked and bloated looking from the oxidation, you'll have to replace the entire length of the cable. If the corrosion / deposit is limited to the battery post and terminal connector you can clean them up with a solution of warm water and baking soda. You can use an emery cloth or a toothbrush to clean the posts and terminal connectors. Dry them up when your done and apply some dielectric grease to the posts which will slow or stop the recurrence of future corrosion deposits. Retighten the terminals to their posts- make sure you maintain the same orientation, red cable to the postive post (+) and the black to the negative (-) post. Please wear safety glasses and gloves whenever you do any kind of work on the battery; or even a face shield.

When you disconnected the battery, you tripped the alarm which locked down everything. In your owners manual, look under the security or alarm system. It will tell you how to disarm your particular alarm system. If I am not mistaken on these you put the key in the drivers door and lock and unlock it 2-3 times. If you do not have the owners manual, you can contact dodge and they will walk you through it.

SOURCE: NEEED FUSE FUSE BOX LAYOUT FOR 2003 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN

You can get free owners manuals online at:

http://www.edmunds.com/ownership/howto/articles/120189/article.html

or just type "owners manuals" in your search.

Here is a post I found that worked for my 2005 caravan.

For a 2001 Dodge Caravan: The owner's manual is vague, only stating that all fuses are under the hood in the fuse box, no diagrams. Once you have removed the fusebox cover, the diagrams for what each fuse does is provided under the lid. UNCLEARLY marked is the radio fuse, a 20amp fuse located 2nd row from top to the right of the accessory relay. It is marked: RDO/IP IGN.

Check your fuses under the hood. Check your manual or on the cover of the fuse box (inside/on top) for location for climate control and check for a bad relay or fuse

I have 91 Previa and about a week ago I was at a stoplight and the battery light flickered on and then my van lost power and died. I bought a new battery and all seemed well until 2 days later when

Hi

Yes it sounds like the alternator voltage regulator is wearing down and needs to be changed or replaced.

If you can get your hands on a 12 volt multimeter, turn the setting to 20 dc and place the negative wire on the negative battery post and the positive wire on the positive battery post.

The battery with motor off should be 12.6 volts and higher, start the the car the read out should be 14.,2 or higher.

You can turn the lights and heater on to see if the alternator can cope with the load.

if read out is less then you need to change or replace it.

Cheers

I have a 1990 Volvo 240 recently the car started to die at random times while driving. When it dies all the dash lights come on can't start it for a bit afterwards. I replaced the battery and it seemed...

  • This is classic of your alternator going bad. Sometimes, when it first begins to go bad it will function on and off. Soon it just stops charging the battery all together. The battery has one function and that is to start the car. Then the alternator is ran by the belt and charges the battery and in effect runs the car. The reason for the lights coming on is the power fail in the car.
  • Buying a new battery worked for a short time because the fresh battery ran the car but with no alternator to charge the battery the car soon died again.
  • The fix is to replace the alternator. Do it soon or even that new battery will go bad from being drained so much.

1989 Cadillac Eldorado 4.5L runs perfect and dies

Your alternators should have a warranty on them...but if your car is breaking alternators, you may have the wrong size belt...maybe to small and putting to much strain on your alternator.

Electrical problem

Personally, replace the ENTIRE fuse box. This is actually relatively inexpensive ($60) so fear not. Basically the stock unit is lackluster (at best) and a nightmare (at worst). Please accept my apologies for pointing to another chat board, yet it is WELL documented at:

http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthr...t=308+fuse+box
http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/me...20/202907.html
Please believe me, DO NOT buy a new Ferrari fuse box, make your own as seen in the links above. The time and effort are WELL worth it!
