It's a buzzing like noise around the tensioner pulley. I ruled out qir conditoner compressor because it's a noise that starts after turning the key on and stays on and gets worse when driven.

Get a mechanic stethscope and place the ens on the idler pulley , water pump body, alternator and power steering pump body. It could be the early stages of bearing failure and you need to know which bearing is making the noise.

I just got back from the acura dealer and the alternator tensioner was on the brink of being seized. Nevertheless, at no cost to me because they replaced the alternator in September and are responsible for total cost. So I am without a car because the part is on backorder. Thanks for your input.

The AC clutch turns , A/C off. so if bearing is bad, you can rule it out
with the A/C on , but that spins the compressor, and if it makes noise too. oop. i drop belts. drop belts (after bills boyd stethoscope check)
i drop belts (almost never) to see what makes noise and what dont.
why not believe the dealer, i bet it used a stethoscope and it did make noises, the tool is sold for $5 at harbor-fright(pun).
i listen to all my accessories before long trips to avoid getting stranded. good bearins purrrrr... bad buzzz. try a good car and practice, and do avoid the fan an belts. running. it takes a steady hand and care to work on moving parts...
my sis, came over, one day, i heard her ford , singing to me
as she drove to our house. i said, it been sing long, yes, about 6 weeks. the steth hit here idler in 2min. and sure it was bad.
here ford the idler pulley is stamping, and a perfect bell.... that sings.

when you take a car to a mech, and he hears the sing
and knows the idler is bad, i will not assume its just one problem.
many cars come in with bad, idler, alt bearing and bad water pump.
all ignored, that is why no promises... he is only human and must find
most problems in a serial fashion, try it and see.....

my last 97 had 10 problems. all ignored.
all very serious. one problem took 25hr labor to fix, spun rod bearing.

How replace a/c belt

Did something seize up and break the belt? You might need to deal with a bigger problem before you just loosen up the tensioner bolt and put a new belt on. Loosen up the tensioner bolt, place the correct belt on, making sure you run it correctly around all the pulleys, then borrow (at OReillys or a similar) the long handled tool, you use to put tension back on the whole pulley system and tighten down the tension bolt. If it was me, I'd go to YouTube to look at a couple of DIY videos on the subject.

I have a 2005 Lincoln aviator that was making a loud whining noise so I took it to the ford dealership and they told me I needed a new idler pulley and belt and that it would be $350 to fix it. I want to...

yes, but if you look under your hood, you should be able to narrow down where the noise is coming from in that large engine compartment. also think about replacing the belt tensioner as well since you are replacing the belt with the idler pulley. its good preventative maintenance!

Replace serpentine belt

Removal & Installation

  1. Rotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise and remove the drive belt.
WARNING Never suddenly let go of the tensioned idler pulley. The force of the spring pressure suddenly released may damage the idler pulley mechanism. Always release the spring pressure gradually.

To install:
  1. Route the belt over the pulleys making sure all the grooves in the pulleys and the belt line up correctly. Refer to the accessory belt routing section of this manual.
  2. Rotate belt tensioner clockwise and slip drive belt over idler pulley on tensioner.

If for any reason, the tensioner is crooked, replace it!!! Also, install the belt with the writing facing you like you are trying to read a book. This WILL (a trick I learned at Mercedes) prevent even a new belt from squeeling!!

I replaced the serpentine belt on my 2002 accura rsx type s it sqeaks and seems loose is there any way to tighten it....tks

The tentioner should keep the belt at the right tention. Are you sure its the belt? I had some squeaking in my 05' RSX and replaced the Tentioner Pulley and the squeaking went away. Maybe this could be the same case. Hope this helps.

How do you change the engine belt

Put a wrench on the center bolt ofthe tensioner pulley. With one hand, rotate the wrench to move the tensioner pulley. With the other hand, remove the belt from another pulley. Carefully release the tensioner pulley and work the belt off the rest of the pulleys. Folly a similar procedure to install the new belt.

Changing idler pulley

you can change it by releasing tension on the pulley arm(as if changing the belt) and then unsecuring the idler arm pulley by means of a large bolt in the center of the pulley, usually reverse threaded. Pulleys cost about 10 bucks, but good bearings don't come cheap.

Alternator belt

Hi

Either you have a siezed or partially siezed idler pulley, tensioner pulley, or ancilliary device (alternator, PAS pump, aircon compressor, etc), a weak tensioner spring on the auto tensioner, or the belt is running out of true.

Or

There is a bolt or something similar protruding into the area of the belt and wearing its way through it.

Regards

Geordie
