I dont know about 1998 but on my 1994 yes, we had to. Just make sure you have a jack underneath it. The front end of the oilpan is sturdy enough as to take rocks and junk that u can put some blocks or a jack on it

How do I change the serpentine belt?

It is suggested that a dealership or very good garage perform this task. The passenger side motor mount is in the middle of the belt and must be detached before the new belt can be installed. This is dangerous and the engine must be properly supported before the mount can be removed or damage could result.
Serpentine belts are designed to be very long lasting so it may be possible that the belt may be fine but the belt tensioner may be weak instead. Please consult that garage or dealership, this is really not something for the weekend mechanic.

How to replace altenator on 97 olds achieva

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Label and disengage the electrical connections from the alternator.
  3. On the 2.5L engines, loosen the adjusting bolts and remove the alternator belt.
  4. If equipped with a serpentine belt, loosen the tensioner and turn it counterclockwise to remove the belt.
  5. Unfasten the alternator mounting bolts, then detach the alternator air inlet connector (3.1L engine only) and remove the alternator from the engine.
To install:
  1. Fasten the alternator to the mounting bracket, using the retaining bolts, washers and nuts. Tighten the retainers to the specifications listed in the accompanying figures.
  1. If equipped with the 3.1L engine, attach the alternator air inlet connector.
  2. Install the serpentine or alternator belt, as applicable. For details, please refer to Section 1 of this manual.
  3. Engage the alternator electrical connections. Tighten the "Bat" terminal nut to 65 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  4. Check the belt tension, then adjust if necessary.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable, then check the alternator for proper operation.

Trying to R & R the serpentine belt on a 1999 Olds Delta 88. The belt is routed arond a motor mount. Do I have to jack the motor and disconnect it from the motor mount in order to remove and replace...

yes you do. place a floor jack under engine with a block of wood on top of jack to protect the engine, put just enough pressure on jack to steady engine. remove motor mount, then jack up engine a bit to take belt off. replace the belt then lower jack and attach the mount. on the mount only the outside bolts need to come off to raise engine. do not remove from engine side unless you are changing it or its bad, be carefull when raising engine, pick it up from a sturdy place, not the oil pan. have a good day !!

Replacing serpentine accessory belt. Is it necessary to remove motor mounting brace to remove and install new serpentine belt?

From my understanding I think you have to remove the motor mount and mount the engine to remove it because I have been asking different mechanics about the serpintine belt on my 1998 Buick Lasabre.

94 saab v6 serp belt replacement. does motor mount

Yes, the motor mount must come off to replace the serpentine belt on the 3.0 6 cylinder motors. Not as daunting a task as it may seem, just requires a jack and block of wood under the oil pan to support the motor.

motor mount does not need to be removed. there is an idler pulley which can be lifted up using a socket and long bar. the belt relaxes and is easily removed and replaced.
