Ok if this still matters, If this is a CVT trans.....VTI and if its a 4 cyl 2.2 ECOTECH 4 cyl, then yes its the durn VTI, You must have the transmission a little warm, raise the vehicle enough to get to the access plug in the center of the drain plug in the transmission, and you have to have some form of a scanner that can read the transmission temperature. You will also have to have the transmission slip additive and the proper green CVT transmission NOT DEXRON to put back in, (About one quart) Essentially once the trans is at normal operating temp, you can remove the allen head plug from the center of the drain plug on the transmission and let it drain until it gets to a drip. Apply thread sealant to the allen head plug and install it back into the drain plug. Then add about a quart of fluid. the fill varied from about 3/4 to 1.25 quarts of the CVT fluid and the one syringe of the additive depending the temperature range of the transmission when the plug was placed back into the transmission drain plug. I hope that no one still owns these types of GM transmissions as they were horrible and self destructed on about a 30000 mile interval, depending on use and towing.

If you cannot find a dip stick near the engine or the transmission then it will not be an open system. transmission dip sticks are coloured red/yellow and have trn on the handle. If it is a closed system then there is no way of checking unless there is a oil change done in which case the pan is removed and refitted and the correct amount of fluid is sucked back into the transmission.

SOURCE: 2006 Saturn Vue Transmission Fluid Check

Here you go..

Be sure that transmission fluid temperature is at least 104° F (40° C). Models with 2.2L engine: To access check/fill plug: In the engine compartment, remove clamp from air hose behind cooling fan. Separate air tube from the hose and push the tube back towards the transaxle. Remove the clip holding the two power steering lines together. All Models: From underneath vehicle remove the transaxle check/fill plug with engine running. Fluid level should be even with hole. Add fluid as needed until fluid flows from hole. Replace check/fill plug and torque to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).

SOURCE: 2007 saturn vue 4 cylinder - change oil

if you've never done this before, i wouldn't experiment...instead, find a friendly mechanic that will do the job and allow you to look on as he completes the work :o)
P.S. ALWAYS take your own WALMART oil filter and use MOBIL ONE, I think your car is 5W20 and takes 4 qts. Then only change the filter every 5k-(when you rotate the tires) and at 15k do a complete drain and filter!
Good Luck

SOURCE: 2002 saturn vue checking transmission fluid

Absolutely if it is an automatic transmission. You do need to use the right type for your product. If you do not change oil yourself, the lube shop should check the trans with each oil change while they do the rest of the work.

My 03 saturn vue starts but does not go forward or reverse

Is this the 4 cylinder or the 6 cylinder model? The 4 cylinder has a notoriously troublesome Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). These mischievous little skamps like to cause mischief at just the wrong times, such as when you are on your way to work on Monday morning, or when you are in the path of a train.

Since you have no engagement into forward or reverse the drive belt has likely failed you. Replace the case half and filter, and all of your dreams will be realized.... probably..
