Have just re-used the oil filter as i failed to get a new one. i washed it with paraffin and petrol. Am i correct .

NO Not at all. Never wash oil filter with any solvent.

Paraffin wax in my oil?! ruining my engine!


#1 there are two types of oil used in engines asphalt base which leaves tar and sludge. And Paraffin base that leaves your wax sludge in engines. these are raw oils and additives have been added to create your engine oil. But now we need to determine how these deposit are created and stick to internal components and the damage that they have done. #1 oil has a life span created by time and temperature. So changing oil at earlier intervals helps stop these sludge build ups, Most new car manufactures call for a 6 month 7500 mile oil change. with a little* after it stating if you drive your short distances and in extremely cold weather to do it sooner. WHY? oil gets contaminated with the by product of combustion and the moisture content in the air by not building enough heat in the oil this allows the oil to cool and stick to the walls in the engine. now the other end salesman drive cars about 3000 miles a month go 6 months the same problem occur due to the additive package added to the oil base has been gone since the oil has reach its limit of use of 7500 miles so the contaminates are suspended in the oil to help create sludge. Now think of your engine having HIGH cholesterol changing your diet corrects this but in the engines case it is your to determine your driving style and change the oil accordingly. one change of recycle oil does not create sludge THIS is a long term problem, NOW CHEAP solution. Warm engine drain oil and filter install the very cheapest filter you can buy. put kerosene and cheap oil in crankcase with filter 3 quarts oil 2 quarts kerosene. let engine idle for 30 minutes. Drain out put fresh oil and filter. Drive 1000 miles repeat again this may take 6-7 changes to reduce the sludge. If engine smokes out exhaust after treatments check oil use which if greater than 1 quart per 1500 miles piston ring damage & valve guide have been done. A rebuild is the only answer to this problem. change engine oil every 6000kms and a oil filter every third oil change and no problem ,this jelly is caused by not changing oil often enough so warm up engine and then drain some out then add about a litre of diesel and a good squirt of fairy liquid washing up stuff then run engine on idle for half hour and then drain it out ,refill with new oil filter and use a the cheapest diesel/petrol oil for a turbo engine you can find and use this all the time none of this fancy long life stuff but the cheapest you can get and this will keep the inside of the engine clean and make it last for ever.

Change air filter, oil, spark plug, cable to battery, When changing the oil, there is no need for a new filter. Just wash the old one with carb clean. Held in by 3 small bolts beside the drain plug. Check the rear end oil (90 weight) use the upper plug. Fill till it runs out. Grease the front end. Change the fuel filter. Drain the carb if it is going to sit thru the winter.

When to change the engine oil


Manufacturers have been changing recommendations to make their vehicles appear to be better than others but bottom line on oil changes is that it's still best to change it every 3,000 miles. You can extend that to 4,000 if you use a quality synthetic. Always use a name brand good quality oil...cheaper oils have a high paraffin base that causes sludge deposits to form. I'd be using a 20w 30 or 40 oil in that engine. Always use a good name brand filter as well. Keeping the oil clean is very important. A poor quality filter allows larger particles to remain in the oil. Those particles are like sandpaper and are the primary source of engine wear. After completing the job, always run the engine and look under the car for leaks. A loose drain plug, forgotten plug gasket or an accidentally double gasketed filter can really ruin your day if not caught early.

Oil light comes on on the first startup of the day then when you turn it off the light goes out and when you start it up again the light is out and does not come on. sounds like a bad oil sensor but what...


You are correct in thinking the sender is failing. The pump will never fail unless you don't maintain the engine. Pumps fail when debris either from another failed component (such as a rod bearing etc) gets into them and scores up the vanes or housing. Poor maintenance causes hard carbon deposits that will do much the same thing and also jam up the pressure relief. If you did have an oiling problem, it would not only be at start up but actually would have more symptoms as the engine warmed up.
Sometimes an engine can be well maintained but will still gunk up. if you don't use a good quality oil.
Lower priced oils are often paraffin based which causes that.
So, replace the sender .

After leaving my 2001 VW Beetle idle then revving it emmits blue smoke and has failed the MOT. The oil and filter has recently been changed.


what viscosity oil did you use???
blue smoke indicates oil burn,and if valve guides, would smoke on deceleration and if rings or block breather, would smoke on acceleration,first try block breather,wash out in petrol,then refit.the mot inspector will give you NO info on why......just charge you a fortune for doing something that may not need doing!!!
invest in a workshop manual and save yourself a fortune...

My toyota lucida is pouring black smoke out of the exhurst and oil leval light is on

Is it a diesel or petrol motor? If it is Diesel or petrol then black smoke is a sign that it is using excessive fuel so it could be a blocked air filter or fuel filter. if it is a diesel motor. So check these 2 items first.
The low oil level light is on because the engine needs the oil topped up, if you fill it to the correct level this will make the oil level light switch off. Hope this helps, let me know how you get on.

is it petrol or diesel?-if its petrol try removing air filter-if its diesel you will have to change oil filter,oil,oil filter and fuel filter in one job lot-this usually works! if not as a last resort find the diesel screw on the fuel pump and turn it down(anti clockwise i think)-note how many turns-you will notice a horrible loss in power,but you can reset it after the test,because no-one will care then

What weight motor oil do i use?


Hello wolfport21: My name is Roger and I will help you. The factory recommended oil is a 15W40 engine oil. I would suggest a low paraffin oil. High paraffin oil caused the rings to stick in the 4.1 engines. If you have a 5.7 engine the oil is the same as the 4.1 engines. Please rate the answer you received.
