Fuel rail pressure too low

You didn't say whether petrol or diesel engine...

In the case of trouble or doubt regarding fuel filters it is best practice to cut open the filter and carry out a close examination for possible contaminants.

Fuel pressure is important, in fact a common rail diesel won't even start if there is insufficient pressure, but the volume of fuel delivered is at least as important as the achievable pressure - without sufficient volume the required pressure simply won't be achieved.

No fuel system check is complete unless the delivery volume has been tested and found satisfactory. If it isn't satisfactory the fuel tank, the pump screen, the pump and pipework should be checked. The pump screen if fitted is so fine water will not pass through it and so water in the fuel tends to reduce the volume.

I suggest you have the fuel system checked - properly!

Hello I'm an M.B. tech.. It sounds like the fuel strainer is clogged. It is a very common problem on M.B. diesel engines of that era. Diesel fuel develops algea inside the fuel tank and after a period of time it clos the strainer. The strainer is at the bottom of the fuel tank where the big fuel hose attatches to the tank. The hose unscrews frome the strainer and then the strainer unscrews from the tank. There is a filter on the strainer that can be cleaned and reinstalled. In the engine compartment there is a small primer pump that is by the fuel rack inline with the feed hose from the tank. If you turn the knob(clear or white plastic) on the pump it will retract allowing you to use it as a hand pump. If when attempting to retract hand pump it is sucked back down and will not stay retracted that means you have a restriction in the line- your fuel strainer is clogged is the most likley problem. replace both fuel filters during repair for best results. Good Luck

Appreciate the direct "Ask Me".

To your concern:
  • Ramping, no start - is significant. it would indicate that possibly the low fuel was agitated due to the stiff angle and dirt, sand, sludge inside the tank was stirred and got inside the intake port of the fuel pump/filter;
  • Fuel Filter - to my knowledge, there is no actual separate filter. There is a screen incorporated into the fuel pump, or in some versions in the fuel pressure regulator. Both are on top of the tank. Looks like you have to bring the entire tank down and check the inside, pump, regulator. Additionally, it may help to use a carb/injector cleaner (pls select appropriate type gas or diesel) when filling up the tank so as to clean hopefully the fuel lines, injector pump, injector, combustion chamber and valves.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
