SOURCE: reapire rear view mirror
Insert a suitable tool between the bottom of the mirror mount and bracket. Push upward on the tool until the mirror mount is released from the bracket.

Go to any glass shop, they'll cut a new mirror and glue it on top of the old one. Much cheaper than replacing the whole unit (hundreds).

SOURCE: My son was trying to
My experience with that would be to use a hot air gun or a hair dryer (would take a little longer) to heat up the mounting piece, then carefully use a razor blade between windshield and glass to remove the adhesive. Be Extremely Careful. Razor Blade will get Hot and Brittle.

This is how the glass shops in my area do it. Clean all the glass out of the mirror carefully. Don't want stitchs. Clean all the old glue off with a knife or razor blade and wash it with window cleaner. Wash the back of the new mirror as well with window cleaner. Put a liberal coat of silicone adhesive on the back of the new mirror and press it into place. Place a small block of wood or plastic on the mirror face and tape it on with black electrical tape. Stretch the tape as you wrap it around, make about 2 complete wraps. Do this on the inside and outside of the new mirror and leave it for 24 hours. Then you simply remove the tape and blocks and nobody will know the difference. Hope this helps. You could also get a auto glass shop to do it. It's not especially expensive. Hope this helps.
