Accelerates/passes very slowly as trans refuses to downshift when in Drive.

I would be looking for a vacuum operated actuator that down shifts when the accelerator is wide open
could be a failing TCM so have the fault codes read first to get an idea of the problem area

When do l use the sport button when driving my car

Typically when you're driving on back roads or curvy roads. It changes the shift point in your transmission to shift later and downshift upon deceleration as to not overuse your breaks.

Protege automatic transmission wont downshift to pass

Isn't the kickdown vacuum operated on older cars? If so, would poor engine vacuum or leak therein cause the tranny not to downshift?

1989 pathfinder transmission 3spd w/ overdrive works great when first started, then downshifting starts way early, started after alternater wentbad

Do you mean upshifting starts way early? Going from 2nd to 3rd in other words?
Ireally don't know your transmission, but the alternator problem might've possibly spiked and hurt your shifting solenoids in the ******. don-ohio (:^)

Cold auto Transmission won't shift into 3 gear until after driving 1 mile or so (driving at about 35 mgh) pickup then downshifts from 3 to 2nd then back to 3rd a few times untill I get to work (7 miles...

Sounds like a bad speed sensor. Perform an ODBII scan soon. ECU should delay upshift until coolant temp senses warm up. It will not work right unless a signal is present from speed sensor.

96 s10 4cyl automatic shifts great through 1-3 but seems to bottom out and even downshift instead of going into overdrive, drives fine when in drive only.

I believe you have a 4l60e transmission.Do you have a chck engine light? The unit may have a 3-2 downshift solenoid going bad or a possible band ''servo'' leaking. The band applies in 2nd and 4th.You may also have a shift solenoid starting to malfnction......Best
