Question about 1999 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

1 Answer

Misfiring 1999 E280 will run on 5 cylinders after full throttle, then return to normal after being turned off and restarted. Generally starts to misfire after any change down in gear to higher revs, and won't accelerate at full throttle at all - frustrating when overtaking! Anyone any ideas? Cheers Craig

Thanks for the reply - No I've never checked what cylinder, I don't know if it's actually running on 5 cylinders but it's that sort of chuffing misfire. It can't be mechanical though cause it re-sets itself when it's restarted.

I thought some sort of rev limiting electronics?

This may be a strange question but do you know which cylinder is misfiring?

If you are getting a lot of misfires and you know everything is good (i.e. spark plugs & wires, etc...), you may want to check the cat converters as one may be plugged. you can use the front O2 ports to check this.

Did you change the Plenium also / if not you should of, these also go bad and leak antifreeze through to egr port , most parts stores will recommend you change it too, i've done several and they look good but the plastic turns soft and leaks coolant to egr port.

not only did the problem switch cylinders, it switched banks. cylinders 5&6 are on the drivers side and 4 is on the passenger side. i would recheck all wires to make sure you have the correctly installed.

I deleted codes (banks 1 & 2 too lean, and cylinder 1 misfiring) and need to drive vehicle to turn sensors back on so I can smog the truck. How do I turn sensors back in? 2001 Ford F-150, 5.4 liter...

If you cleared the codes with a code scanner, or battery disconnect, all is should take to trigger the problem again is 2 driver cycles.

Drive cycle :
Operating temp engine ( let it warm up )
At least 1/2 tank fuel
A run of normal throttle usage, to maintain at least 46 mph for 5 min, back down to a stop and then back over 46 mph again ( 5 min ).
2 cycles of this should have the DTC P1000 code removed ( tests completed ) and if the error is still there, the CEL should illuminate again.

Engine light, poor acceleration and bucking from engine

The evaporation canister can cause this, so would any vacuum leak. A faulty throttle position sensor or camshaft position sensor would also cause this but it would in the diagnostics most likely.

1999 Town Car began running very rough - suddenly.

When cleaning your engine, water/degreaser went down the spark plug ports. Try using a air compressor blow gun to remove the moisture from around the spark plugs and boots. The water was causing the engine to misfire on 3 cylinders at first and as the ports started to evaporate the moisture, the less misfiring was occuring. Dry thouroughly and hopefully coils do not have damage to them. Also check to make sure the boot is making good contact with the spark plug.

Cylinder number 5 is misfiring. Check spark plug, spark plug wire and ignition coil for the number 5 cylinder. The number 5 cylinder is the closest to the front of the car on the drivers side. With engine running in dark (at night) take a spray bottle of water and lightly mist spark plug wires and coil and look for arcing. Autozone will test coil for free.
