Id use a volt meter to chedk tps run sweep test a sudden spike before each end if this happen or reading suddenly goes to 0 thats the easiest thing to chek before needing scantools

If you mash the gas pedal to the floor it will not shift until it hits a certain RPM. Which is probably a lot higher rpm than you feel comfortable with. I have a 93 dodge power ram and I thought the same thing until I passed a bunch of cars that I had no business passing and it was screaming before it shifted.

Check the detent cable on the throttle body next to the throttle cable to see if it is to tight. there should be an adjustable stop on the cable .

ABS LIGHT ON AS WELL?IF SO..I WOULD LOOK AT ABS SENSOR IN REAR DIFFERENTIAL..GETS SPEED SIGNAL FROM THIS SENSOR AS WELL..USES ONE IN TRANS FOR TRANS SHIFTING

Scan your computer and check voltage at your T.P.S (Throttle Position Sensor) should have 0.50 volts with key on engine off, also press on gas paddle should increase up to 5.0 volts, there should not be a break in voltage as you press paddle, if it drop while pressing gas paddle bad sensor, computer don't know how far on the gas your foot is at.Good luck.
