1997 pontiac firebird does back pressure have any thing to with the egr valve on a lt1 engine


It could. The egr valve allows some exhaust gas to re-enter the intake and get burned again. If there is no back pressure in the exhaust system the sensor that reads the egr valve may not work correctly and the egr valve could cause a symptom of having a vac leak.

coolant reservoir slowly going down! freeze plugs-( no leaks)-( no) coolant leaks outside of engine, no white smoke, changed oil today and no coolant! coolant reservoir sits on tire wall.

sounds like either a vacuum leak (check the bottom of the "tomatoe juice can" for starters) or a bad or plugged egr valve or egr solenoid.
check engine lite refers to emissions probs only...most likely egr or vac leak. Had the same prob on my 95 5.0 f150...needed new can and egr valve.

Hi i recently purchased a 2004 subaru legacy station wagon. There is a weird smell coming out of t he front hood. it steams out and there is no leakage anywhere. The smells is like burning food.


Could be a water pump leaking,and
then the hot engine burns off the coolant
which you smell,thus you see no leak
Check the radiator and canister bottle

I HAVE A CHRYSLER 300, V-6, AND THE ENGINE LIGHT IS ON , AND IT SMOKES WHEN I START IT UP. WHAT MAY BE THE PROBLEM? IS IT THE EGR VALVE?


EGR Valve failures are pretty rare. It's really unlikely that your EGR valve has anything to do with your engine smoking. The smoke is more likely to be caused by bad valve seals worn piston rings, a leaking injector, a leaking fuel pressure regulator, or a blown head gasket. The Check Engine Light being on is anybody's guess until you ask your engine computer why it turned the light on. Who knows? There might even be a fault code in there that may lead you to the cause of the smoking problem.

I have the engine check light on my 2001 Hyundai XG 300. The codes I brought up with the OBD2 reader were P0100 P0115 P0120 P1600 What would you suggest is the problem and fix on this I also...

Description of codes are:
P01600 - Serial cable malfunction-- check connection,
Po115-Coolant sensor-indicates a open or short-circuit in the engine coolant temperature sensor circuit.

The P0401 code is Insufficient Flow Exhaust Gas Recirculation System.

The code is set when the engien computer detects less than the requested amount of EGR flow when the engine is hot and is under load.

What usually sets the code is an inoperative EGR valve, or a carbon clogged port under the EGR valve.

On your engine, the EGR valve is vacuum operated, and there is a little computer-controlled EGR solenodi valve in the vacuum hose that detemines how much vacuum the EGR valve gets. If this solenoid is bad, or there is a vacuum leak in one of the hoses, the EGR valve won't open when it should setting the code.

Since the dealer already cleaned the EGR valve tube, I would suspect your problem is likely due to a bad EGR solenoid valve or a leaky vacuum hose to the EGR valve.

I would clear the codes first and run engine for two min and re-check codes.

Hi, I have a 00' malibu ls with an overheating problem. I have changed the thernostat, water pump, resvoir coolant tank and the radiator and still overheats. I was told if I clean the EGR it will probably...


Well, the EGR valve does lower the temprature of the burn, in the combustion chamber, but it cannot resolve the overheating...
Did you pressure test the cooling system? and Did you have the heater on HIGH heat, when filling? Did you use the correct mixture of coolant and antifreeze?
and what is the indication of overheat? Boiling out coolant, or gauge reading? coolant boiling out is certainly an indication, did you also pressure test the cap?

When pressure testing, does it take tons of pumping, indicating air in the system?

Check for

vacuum leaks on intake manifold,

the air tube between the air filter.

intake manifold vacuum hose.

Also remove carbon built up behind the EGR valve and the EGR passage tube.

Vacuum leak WILL offset the intended 14.7 to 1 air fuel ratio.

More un-metered air (leaks) will lean out the fuel mixture.

Use small amount of Berryman carb clearer at potential air leak area will help you identify trouble spot.

At idle,just spray and listen for the RPM surge.

The in-rush of carb clearer will increase the RPM on the motor.

Record the problem spot(s) and address it later.

EGR carbon built up require 2+ hours to clean from start to finish.

You will need a new EGR base gasket before your start.

Locate and remove the EGR valve after the vehicle is cool down.

Carefully record the connector and vacuum line (for older vehicle) location by drawing an easily to follow diagram.

Remove the EGR valve.

Inspect the location of the carbon built-up inside the valve and the EGR passage tube.

SOAK these areas with WD-40 spary.

You will need a small screwdriver,cloth hanger and lot of newspaper and time to get this cleaning done right.

RE-SOAK the carbon and let it sit for over-night will also help.

One the last round,pass a shop vacuum of the EGR valve and the passage pipe.

Install the new EGR gasket and connectors.

Allow the vehicle to warm up outdoor to burn up any remaining WD-40.


Take it for a test drive.

Engine Coolant Loss with No Visible Leaks (Reseal Injector Sleeve)

Some owners may comment on engine coolant loss with no visible leaks. Excessive white smoke or a coolant type odor coming from the exhaust pipe, along with low coolant levels, may indicate coolant in the combustion chamber.
Cause
Condition may be caused by engine coolant entering the cylinder due to a dirty or damaged seal between the fuel injector sleeve and the cylinder head.

If it's black smoke, you could have a faulty or dirty EGR valve and may not be closing 100%. Remove the EGR valve and clean it with spraying carb cleaner and reinstall after inspecting the valve can move without any binding. Goo luck and hope this helps.
