Question about 2001 Saab 9-3

I have a 2001 saab 9-3se convertible and the top motor runs but the top will not go down. What might be wrong the closest saab dealership is 1.5 hours away?

Is there fluid leaking out? look at the top rams on sides. You can manually lift your top through the sequence after it unlatches. Fold 5th bow up and raise tonneau and look at rams. Any leak is bad. I could also be low on fluid wich you check at the front edge of trunk, 2 holes 1 for flashlight 1 to ck level. Requires special fluid from saab, do not substitute!

Most likely the 4 top pistons are failing... there are 2 on each side and they leak over time... thye cost used generally 150.00 each and brand new 295.oo each...

99 SAAB convertible, top takes a long time to open and close now.


The most common reason for this is low hydraulic fluid. The noise is probably the pump running while empty. When fluid id present it dampens that noise. Behind the rear seat is the combination motor/pump/reservoir. With the top in the DOWN position, fill the reservoir with ATF and cycle the system a few times as far as it will go. Repeat until the reservoir will take no more fluid. If that works, it is only a patch fix. You must now inspect the lines, motor and cylinders for leaks. The fluid does not evaporate. Looking at buying a 1999 Saab 9-5 convertible but the top wont go down on it. If I need to replace the motor is this difficult to replace?


It is not an inexpensive problem to repair. Its probably low on fluid wich means it has a leak in one of the top rams or it could also be the drive gear in the pump motor which can be repaired if one is crafty. look in trunk, forward rail 2 holes one for light 1 for fluid level. Con you hear motor running?

You are probably leaking hydraulic (ATF) fluid.
Check the lines and cylinders for leaks. Replace any leaking lines or cylinders. Always replace them in pairs.
When the leak is fixed...
Behind the rear seat is the motor/pump/reservoir.
With the top down, fill the reservoir with ATF.
Cycle the system a few times.
Repeat till the reservoir will accept no more fluid.
You can change it to a manual top by removing the bolt at the top of the cylinders and lowering the both shafts down into the cylinders.

93 convertible top wont go down


This happenrd to me the first few times after filling the tank. When the roof stops push the switch to up then back until movement stops then go back to down, eventually it will get rid of all the air in the system and the roof should start to work.

1997 Saab Convertible top is broken, and the rain is coming in!


the rear of the top under the back window is drawn down into place and latched by its own motor that simply pulls or pushes two rods. If the motor stopped moving for whatever reason, simply fold down the back seat, reach your arm through the little access at the top of the boot on the drivers side and pop the rods out of place and latch/unlatch manually. this takes a flashlight and some inspection time to do at first if you dont know what your feeling for.

the convertible top motor is underneath the upholstery in the rear trunk compartment underneath the package shelf.undo the upolstery clips and lower the cloth in the trunk exposing the motor and reservoir. make shure after motor replacement you refill the reservoir completely and cycle the top up and down a few times to purge the lines of air. otherwise you will have erratic top operation.

Saab roof starts to open but the lid dose not fully open to let the roof fold down


The 94-98 Saab 900 cars have numerous top issues that are known. The primary issue is the design of the convertible top Tonneau motor that is located in the right rear quarter panel behind the light. The problem with the original motors was that there was not enough strength in the housing that held the motor to support the top movement because the teeth on the gear drive would get chewed up when the motor moved out of position. The failure of the Tonneau motor causes the top to chatter about half way up or down because the teeth of the motor gears would get chipped off. Replacement of the gears or replacement of the motor is the only repair and the convertible top Control module must be programmed after the repair by someone with a Saab Tech 2 computer tool which is used to program the top potentiometer settings. If you catch this problem early enough it can be repaired by using the bracket reinforcement kit.
Check latches is also a common failure which displays on the Saab Information Display (SID) Generally, this failure is due to problems with the micro-switch located in the latches that secure the convertible top when up.
Another issue with the convertible tops has been the control module that controls the top electronically. The major problem with this is device is that it looses the ability to communicate with the Saab tech 2 tools. This problem appears to have been solved in the newest versions of the ECM.
