Engine Light comes on when the engine computer detects a problem. It sets a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code). Find out what the code is. You'll need an OBDII scan tool to retrieve any powertrain codes. Once you do this, let me know what DTC's you retrieved.

Did you scan it for any trouble codes? OBDII Data Link connector and an approved OBDII scanner will tell you what trouble codes have been stored/set in the Engine Control Unit (ECU) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Let me know which code(s) is/are stored in the ECU/PCM.

If you can't comply with my requests, then take the vehicle into a Hyundai Service Center and have them diagnose the problem (pay the diagnostic fee). they will give you an estimate of repairs (parts, labor, tax, time-frame, etc). Best solution I can offer you.

My 2001 XG300's rpms get erratic when car is stopped. When I take off from a red light it struggles past 20 mph and the check engine light will come on until I let go of the gas, then it usually goes back...

It sounds like you may be having a problem with the throttle position sensor in the engine compartment.
It's expensive, but you should try some fuel injector cleaner before you do any major work.
If you see improvement with the cleaner, consider having the injectors cleaned. It may be all you need and it is cheaper than having the sensor changed.
Best wishes!
