Cigarette lighter/charger socket has sunk through.

My girlfriend indicates that ther Cigarettel lighter/power supply was loose to begin with when she got her car (2006 Corolla CE)

She didn't think much of it - until after about a year of ware an tear and constantly plugging in her cell phone charger/ipod adapter/etc etc that finally the socket now has fallen through the whole and has sunk to what looks to be under the radio or near the gear box.

Was just wondering if anyone has experienced this with a Corolla? and what they did to fix it? Is it easy to pull out the panels and re-instill the socket? Is it possible the socket is now broken and has no power?
