it sounds more like a whistle but it could be a squeal. I don't know too much about cars when theres a problem i usually take it to the shop, and trust them but it;s been there 3x and they keep giving me the runaround. It only happens after takeoff after i drive and come to a complete stop. about 5-10 seconds long but everytime. and the car is actually a 98 continental and not town car.

    thanks so much.

it all started with the check engine light, i took it in they said i needed good tune up, fine did that then the light came back tokk it back then they said it needed new 02 sensors, replaced them both then light still on now there telling me i need a new fuel pump which by the way is 700 bucks. i feel like i been given the runaround especially since i am woman.

in talking wirth my coworkers at work, they said it could not be the fuel pump, because if it was i would not be able to drive it to work everyday. Is this correct? please help.

he connected an instument to the engine and told me the instrument had to read 50 or 60 and mine was reading at 30. Is this what you were refering to??

i don't quite remember the exact code but i remember the code had meant the system was driving too lean.

When a fuel pump is going out, it will make a loud whistling sound, but Ford is known for loud fuel pumps (Lincoln is a Ford product). I had a Mustang a few years ago that had a really loud fuel pump but it worked fine for the 6 years I had it. I would ask your mechanic if they did a fuel pressure test and get from them the results (need to know what the psi (pounds per square inch) is. Then I can compare that to the specs and that will tell us if the pump is operating correctly. Also, if you can tell what trouble code was found when you took the car in with the engine light on. Trouble codes start with the prefix P0xxx, example: P0301.

Well, unfortunetly, a lean code with low fuel pressure and a whining fuel pump all point to a failing fuel pump, which will leave you stranded. My suggestion would be to talk to the manager of the repair shop and have them work you a deal because from what you're telling me it sounds like they missed the ball on your first two visits. I would demand they not charge for the labor, so you just pay for the part. Let me know if you need further explanations.

2003 PT Cruiser turbo. Has just 67k miles on it. Just began making a low pitched loud whistle sound on acceleration or load/uphill. Gets louder with greater acceleration/load, no decrease in power.

I took my car to Keller's Auto Repair in Gettysburg PA, He specializes in Chryslers. I have 04 Cruiser with 2.4 Turbo that had the same whistle noise, and check engine light on. He found code P0301. The noise was caused by the #1 Cylinder injector O ring. Check them out on facebook. They will help you.
