Have your key tested... yes you have a chipped key. if this isn't the problem suspect the key tumbler or the wires for the security system that go to it...

We finally got rid of our 05 Impala because of all the issues we had with it. We replaced the Passlock system, and still had ongoing problems. The 05 Impala should have been voted Worst Car in America.

I agree but the Jeep Cherokee is even worse with it's system. Don't blame the manufactures because they cant predict climate/abuse/maintenance and more 5-10-15 years down the road. Stuff happens. I ride a motorcycle just for this reason. Cheaper, A lot cheaper

SOURCE: 1996 cavalier will not crank

when it wont crank, you will need a test lite to ck the small wire at starter for a 12 volt signal when commanded to start by the key. also make sure there is 12 volts from battery going to larger wire on starter. if so and still wont crank, starter replacement is probable. (assuming grounds are clean) they can be very intermittent. another quick test would be while trying to start, holding key in start position, rap lightly on starter with hammer to see if it kicks, if so, replace starter.

SOURCE: 2002 impala intermitenly wont start

I would clean the battery connecters or possibly change them. How old is the battery? sometimes when battery get old, they have enough juice to crank the motor but not enough to start it..But then again, if it doesn't crank at all sometimes, it could certainly be a bad or loose battery terminals..Start with this since its the simplest and easiest and could very well be your problem. hope this helps

2008 nissan sentra has occasional starting issues. this has happened 4 times since we bought the car. car runs fine, sometimes will not start when key is turned. everything is dead....no lights inside, no...

Could be bad battery or Somthing going on with the main fuse box.  Another thing to check is your ground wires.  If they are loose, you can not complete the circut.

Turn off security light on my 1992 cadillac deville

I had that same problem and it took me forever to figure out what was wrong. You are probably using an aftermarket key as was I. The stupid little plastic/metal chip in the shaft of the key is for the security system. Sometimes if you insert the key and turn too fast it sets off the security system. To solve the problem go get another key made from a different key maker, they cost around $15-20. Or, insert the key slowly and turn the ignition slowly. Or go get a good key from the dealer, I've heard it may be ~$50 for this key but it should work the best. FYI I still just use my aftermarket key and just deal with the occasional no start wait 3 min ordeal. Good luck.
