Ford f150 2001 4x4 problem, acuator?

My 4x4 didn't work when I bought it! so I messed with it and realized my solenoids were bad, replaced them both and still no bag dang! I then followed my vacuum lines down to the actuator piece that moves when you switch to 4x4, it then worked when I was in 4 high but not 4 low. went inside for little while went back out to go test it then the opposite seemed to happen only 4 low works now

Look online for a mechanical actuator... more reliable. you'll fight that one until you're blue in the face

ok, i will have to do that. do you think the actuator is what the problem really is? or maybe the motor on the TC? Thanks

anytime you have vacuum controlling something you have issues. That would be my first guess is to check for cracked vacuum lines, then the actuator then the controls

yeah its kind of a crappy design by ford, but when i check the vacuum lines can i just unplug the 4x4 enagage solenoid line and see if it has vacuum? or would that mess anything up? im new to these 4x4, once again thanks for your help and information!

sounds like it is loosing vacuum check all the lines for a crack even the engine lines will cause it to loose vacc. pressure. if it is not run to the vacuum reserve canister you may not have enough vacc. to hold the actuator in several times I just run new lines and that helped and not very costly.

SOURCE: My 98 s10 is stuck in 4 wheel drive low.

Pull the kick panel on the passenger side. there is a small box mounted there that is the computer that controls the actuator for the 4wd system. this is notorious for problems due in fact that the connector likes to pull out and away from the module. I had the same problem and the solution is simple.. take a long zip tie and get it between a few of the wires and around the module. tie it in and have a nice day.. it wont come off or try to pop out anymore and you should have no issues getting into 2wd, 4wd h, 4wd L.

SOURCE: 01 Chevy Silverado 4 X 4 not working. 4WD light

Having the same exact problem but with my 1999 escalade. Thought it was the actuator bought a new one installed it transfer case would engage but front end wouldnt lock. Took it out of housing left it plugged in got a friend to go through all the 4wd for me and the plunger never moved out the actuator. Checked my wiring harness which is a four prong ann it had one hot prong like it is suppose to. Traced wires even replaced dash switch same problem. Taking it to local dealership tom to have it checked for codes. I was told it could be the transfercase actuator even though its workin that actuator is what sends power to the front to engage the actuator to lock the differential.

Encoder motor located on the transfer case is usually the problem. It is the motor that shifts the transfer case.

If everything inline is good, then replace the switches. Your truck IS hitting sixteen years old now, so it really could be anything in the line from the switches to the transfer case.

replace the 4 wheel drive acuator if in 4wd with selector and the wheels are still free then the acuator is bad even tho you 12v the acuator may not be pulling back to lock in the hub for 4 wd. simply replace it as their is a small spring on the acuater that over time becomes week and can no longer hold the presure that is created when it activated.

Lights work, car will not start. clicking sound when you turn the ignition, sometimes there is no sound when you turn the ignition.Tried to jump it but it didn 't work.

sounds like a bad starter solenoid. -- you can try and jump from one side of the solenoid to the other and see if the car will start then. or just replace the solenoid with a new one and this will solve your problem. now the solenoid and the starter are one complete unit and need to be replaced together.

I would follow their recommendation as I had the same problem with my car. They unhooked the power to that door and it was fine. The problem was a short in the wiring in the door that was causing the problem. So maybe get them to check the wiring in the door as well.
