Check the neutral safety switch or if its a standard the clutch safety switch. These switches are to prevent you from starting the engine while the vehicle is in gear . It should only start when in park or neutral or id standard when the clutch is pressed to the floor.
On the starter solinoid there are three connections . One is where the large positive battery cable is connected . The other large connection is where the wire continues into the starter . and the small wire is from the neutral switch and the key switch . To varify the starter is working properly , first put the transmision in neutral with the emergency brake engaged and the wheels chalked . connect a 14 gauge wire to the positive battery therminal . Turn the ignition key to the run position . With the positive wire touch it to the small wire connection on the sloinoid . The engine should turn and start. If it dosent there is a problem with the starter . If it starts shut it off . Chech for 12 volts at the small wire connected to the solinoid when someone is holding the key in the start position ( all the way ) . If there is no voltage there is a fault at the neutral switch or at the key switch or a broken wire anywhere in between them.

Have your fuses checked, or have your started checked, it might have burned out.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS THAT MY IGNITION SWITCH IS BAD AND NEED REPLACEMENT?

first is if your battery is charged and cable connections are clean and you have power everywhere else there is no click ,best way is to get a test light go to ur starter u will find a thick wire going to ur starter ground ur light touch to thick cable on starter check for power .there will be one other connection on starter touch ur test lite to that connection and have someone turn key to start position if it lites and nothing happens its the starter or starter solenoid if it doesnt its probly the ignition switch . but first check all ur fuses with a test lite .also a voltmeter would be your best bet instead of a test lite so u can make sure got 12 volts at test point make sure u got good connections and good grounds a volt meter is better thana test lite for that

89 Camry won't start!

Check for power on the small wore at the starter with the key in the crank position. If there is power there and your sure the battery is good than the starter is bad. If there is no power work your way back to the neutral safety switch on the clutch pedal. There should be power in and out with the key in the crank position and the pedal fully depressed. Make sure there is not a balled up floor mat behind the clutch pedal. Couldn't tell you how many times I charged customers for a tow and an electrical check and removed there floor mat! If there is no power to the neutral safety switch than the problem may be a little more involved. I need to know if it has a four cylinder or v-6 That should give you a couple things to check in the mean time. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using FixYa.com!

When I turn the key to start the car, there is a ticking sound and the car won't start

Make sure your battery is fully charged. Also, make sure all your battery terminals and connections are clean and tight. If the vehicle still makes a clicking noise it is probably your starter solenoid. It is then probably time for a new starter.

Car is clicking does it need a starter and where is it located in the car

Is it a fast clicking (a sign of low voltage) or a single click when you turn to start position?
Did you try giving it a jump from another car to supply a full 12 volts to your system?
Follow the + (sometimes has a red cover) postive big cable from the battery down to the starter.
If it clicks strongly when you turn to start with the key and you have a fully charged battery but it does not crank the engine over chances are you do need a new starter.
Disconnect the cable(s) from the battery before removing the starter.Clean them when reinstalling them.

88 Toyota Camry won't start

Had the same problem with an '88 Camry. Replaced the battery, distributor, and starter, but it didn't fix the problem. Then, a few years later, when the battery was getting old and tired, I replaced it with a more expensive _heavy-duty_ battery. That helped quite a bit. It didn't totally fix the problem, but made it a lot less frequent.

A mechanic I trust told me that non-OEM replacement rebuilt starters pretty much all have substandard wiring, with bad spots in the windings. A heavy-duty battery maybe cranks out enough extra amps to mostly compensate for this.
