Sounds very bad, if you drive it more like that the engine could fail completely. Its possible the big end bearings banging because you did not put enough oil in the car at some time in the past.

Replace the egr, or if you want to be sure, have a friend give it gas ( unless you are familiar with the throttle body) while you listen under the hood. You should be looking between the firewall an engine. Once you locate it, you will know if your tapping is coming from the egr. Could be that something is touching a fan, or even the cv joint (would get worse during turns). Best bet, get under the hood and check it out. If the egr code is coming up, it needs to be replaced.
What speed are you going when it chugs? It could be as simple as a bad spark plug or a spark plug wire/boot grounding out. When spark plug boots get old, the rubber cracks and lets voltage arc out the side and to the engine instead of through the plug. This will be most noticeable when trying to maintain a speed of over 40 mph, or under mild acceleration. The reason for being noticeable at this speed/acceleration level is that the transmission torque converter will be locked, transferring the vibration from any engine miss straight through to the wheels.
It sounds like you have a rod problem. If that is the case the engine will need to be taken apart to be fixed. Price varys from shop to shop but they can do a bunch of tests on it and tell you exactly what is wrong with it for about 80 to 100 dollars
