Smoke is generally associated with heat, possibly wiring trapped and shorting out. Get it checked out by a garage, batteries are extremely dangerous, they are filled with sulphuric acid that give off Hydrogen gas when charging and discharging (this smells like bad eggs) If this is the smell, a spark or light could cause an explosion and cause you serious damage, best course of action get an experienced opinion. On and Off smell of smoke

Have a look under the van and see if you have any plastic melted to the exhaust. (like a plastic shopping bag)
If you don't see anything, I would look close around the exhaust under the hood to make sure no wires are making partial contact with the hot exhaust.
Final check would be the wires from the O2 sensors making contact with the exhaust.
You will have them before and after the converter Fairly close to the engine and no farther back than the driver seat area.

Burning smell when running car ? Oil or electrical ?

open the hood and observe the smoke(if any) electrical smell will show a yellowish color with a blue/green/red yellow flame and it moves fast..oil smoke and antifreeze smoke(vapor really) will sort of "steam" off from near the area its leaking from when hot.. brake smell and clutch smell are almost the same since both use like materials for friction..keep an eye on this for potential problems and may need to move the vehicle outside so if it goes up in flame the house wont/grarage whatever//

Have electrical issues with 1996 T&C van. Problem with Remote Starter and smoke and smell of burning rubber. Had to disconnect battery to get the van to stop trying to start. When i drove it home, it...

Yes it is . The remote starter wire has touch together and is wanting to start the starter, they have shorted together, The burning rubber smell is the wire melting due to the electrical short. Take the remote starter out plus the push button and reinstall using new set of wire And if you decide to install a new remote starter youll have to install a fuse in line with the positive wire.

Won't start. Seems like no power is getting to the starter. Also smelled a little electrical smoke.

You could have a bad battery, is there a hydrogen sulfide smell ( rotten eggs)? Try a new battery if it is more than a couple years old.

Electrical Problems

Do not leave the car in the garage without the battery disconnected until you locate the source of the smoke, the best tool to find the smoke's source is your nose, smell the area around the source of the smoke, if you smell a really nauseating smell you found it, then look for signs of burnt wires or burnt components, also look for any oil that may have caused the smoke, but I doubt that was the source, this sounds electrical. I know of no problems for your car that would cause this, so most likely it is not a common problem.
