Question about Chrysler PT Cruiser
Smoke is generally associated with heat, possibly wiring trapped and shorting out. Get it checked out by a garage, batteries are extremely dangerous, they are filled with sulphuric acid that give off Hydrogen gas when charging and discharging (this smells like bad eggs) If this is the smell, a spark or light could cause an explosion and cause you serious damage, best course of action get an experienced opinion.
