Purge solenoid is located on the front rad support on the left of vehicle when looking at vehicle from the front. It has one electrical connector and 2 hoses attatched

DTC P0446: Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) Vent System Performance
Circuit/System Description
This DTC tests the evaporative emission (EVAP) system for a restricted or blocked EVAP vent path. The control module commands the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve Open and the EVAP canister vent solenoid valve Closed. This allows vacuum to be applied to the EVAP system. Once a calibrated vacuum level has been reached, the control module commands the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve Closed and the EVAP canister vent solenoid valve Open. The control module monitors the fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor for a decrease in vacuum. If the vacuum does not decrease to near 0 inch H2O in a calibrated time, this DTC sets.
Diagnostic Aids

An intermittent condition could be caused by a damaged EVAP vent housing, a temporary blockage at the EVAP canister vent solenoid valve inlet, or a pinched vent hose. A blockage in the vent system will also cause a poor fuel fill problem.

An EVAP canister, vent hose, or vent solenoid valve that has restricted flow may cause this DTC to set. Using a purge solenoid command with a scan tool will allow vacuum to be applied to the system instead of pressure. With the engine running, the EVAP canister vent solenoid valve open, and the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve commanded to 100 percent, the fuel tank vacuum should not increase to more than 5 inches H2O.

An EVAP canister filter that is restricted can cause this DTC to set. Refer to Evaporative Emission Canister Replacement .

Disconnecting one component at a time while the EVAP system is under flow will help to pinpoint a restriction in the system


Do you have a scan tool that reads data PID'S ?
Your FTP - fuel tank pressure sensor could be at fault !

    Ignition ON and fuel cap removed, verify that the FTP sensor parameter is between 1.3-1.7 volts. ?‡'
    If not within the specified range, go to the FTP sensor section in Circuit/System Testing.

  1. Install the fuel cap.
  2. With the engine running, the EVAP canister vent solenoid valve open, and the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve commanded to 100 percent, the fuel tank vacuum should not increase to more than 12 inches H2O.

How to repair and where is located P0449 Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Valve/Solenoid Circuit Malfunction


Purge Solenoid and Vent Valve are two different items within the Emissions system. The purge valve is under hood near intake manifold and the vent valve is under bed near fuel tank. I would suggest that you verify what the real problem is before buying any parts. It could get expensive to "guess" at this system.

Find?
on the car, ? or to buy one?
in the USA, we have a sticker under the hood, open hood
look up, see vacuum map. It may not show the rear of car vacuum parts.. there are only 2 places to get that info.

USA cars have a more complex system. you never stated country. Our FSM covers all this in chapter 1., page 1a-14
shows the location, for my v6 GV., my purge VSV is top right
rear of my V6 engine, the other EVAP vsv mounted on EVAP
canister bracket.
P0496 DTC ,
during this test the vent valve is closed, if not the vent valve
is stuck open or the caniter is breached, (as in vacuum leaks anywhere this point)
the purge valve is closed, if the ECU sees a pressure drop
it fails, even a loose gas cap... the
fuel tank is sealed. and the vent hose goes to the eval can.
if its not sealed you will get lots of evap DTC errors.
when not driving the car, the system is sealed.
when you drive, the ECU opens both valves. (VSV)
and fresh air flows to the CANister ,via the vent
and then all the nasty HC fumes are sucked in to the intake
of engine via the purge. VSV.
but the ECU does monitor tests on this EVAP.
it is not smart at all, it only knows 3 things.
It monitors tank pressure. and can see the system is breached.
Low pressure all the time.
it can open the purge valve, with the vent closed.
if this fails the system is breached from CAN on back.
once these tests (monitors) pass it then checks that
the vent valve when opened (with purge) does show a drop in pressure.
using the DTC as a reason to just replace parts, is not going to work, and is expensive.
in most cases 99% any evap failure is just a loose gas cap.
or a loose hose. or routed wrong at CAN.
It is not smart enough to show, GAS cap loose.

the drawings in the book are great. ,as are th tests
but the rules for the monitors in the book are horrid.
I learned them the hard way, trial and error.
I created faults an saw the results.

EVAP System Vent Circuit Malfunction

This diagnosis detects leaks in the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) purge line using of vapor pressure in the fuel tank. The EVAP canister vent control valve is closed to shut the EVAP purge line. The vacuum cut valve bypass valve will then be opened to clear the line between the fuel tank and the EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve. The EVAP control system pressure sensor can now monitor the pressure inside the fuel tank. If pressure increases, the Engine Control Module (ECM) will check for leaks in the line between the vacuum cut valve and EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve.

Possible causes
- Incorrect fuel tank vacuum relief valve
- Incorrect fuel filler cap used
- Fuel filler cap remains open or fails to close
- Foreign matter caught in fuel filler cap
- Leak is in line between intake manifold and EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve
- Foreign matter caught in EVAP canister vent control valve
- EVAP canister or fuel tank leaks
- EVAP purge line (pipe and rubber tube) leaks
- EVAP purge line rubber tube bent
- Blocked or bent rubber tube to EVAP control system pressure sensor
- Loose or disconnected rubber tube
- EVAP canister vent control valve and the circuit
- O-ring of EVAP canister vent control valve is missing or damaged
- EVAP canister is saturated with water
- EVAP control system pressure sensor
- Absolute pressure sensor

Possible solution
- Loose fuel filler cap

My engine light is on . I have a code # E-0455


The PCM monitors vacuum level via the fuel tank pressure sensor input. At an appropriate time, the EVAP purge solenoid and the EVAP vent solenoid are turned on, allowing engine vacuum to draw a small vacuum on the entire evaporative emission system. After the desired vacuum level has been achieved, the EVAP purge solenoid is turned off, sealing the system. A leak is detected by monitoring for a decrease in vacuum level over a given time period, all other variables remaining constant. A large leak in the system causes DTC P0445 to be set.

If the desired vacuum level cannot be achieved in the test described above, a large leak or a faulty EVAP purge solenoid is indicated. This can be caused by the following conditions:

*Disconnected or faulty fuel tank pressure sensor.

*Missing or faulty fuel cap.

*Disconnected, damaged, pinched, or blocked EVAP purge line.

*Disconnected or damaged EVAP vent hose.

*Disconnected, damaged, pinched, or blocked fuel tank vapor line.

*Disconnected or faulty EVAP canister solenoid.

*Disconnected or faulty EVAP vent solenoid.

*Open ignition feed circuit to the EVAP vent or purge solenoid.

*Damaged EVAP canister.

Code 449? what is this,anyone. tks


Code po449 is for bad  solenoid vent valve.After replacing the valve  check for the   12 volts at the "pink" wire.
This error relates too

Error codes P0442 and P0455 in Dodge Dakota 2001


Hello shoretex...Yes sir you can repair this yourself...
p0442 is medium leak detected ...p0456 is small leak....and p0440 is a general evap system failure.. evap codes are a common thing. gas caps are an inexpensive place to start. There are two types of evap hoses on the Dodge... hard plastic and soft rubber.... before you replace parts check the soft rubber first at the evap cans and pump located about a foot in front of the gas tank fill pipe on trucks located next to the transfer case or right behind the trans on the driver side. hard plastic lines will brake or rub through...check spots where lines come in contact with anything. this is a common thing with older trucks...hair line cracks will kick a p0442 code, and a p0445 code...When you find a leak, repair it, and rescan...sometimes there are several leaks, continue with inspection and repairs until you get it all fixed up.... Remember..start at simple and work from there...
i will post the evap. system in more detail to help you troubleshoot the problem.
EVAP System: The Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Control system used on all vehicles is the charcoal canister storage method. This method transfers fuel vapor from the fuel tank to an activated carbon (charcoal) storage device (canister) to hold the vapors when the vehicle is not operating. When the engine is operating, the fuel vapor is purged from the carbon element by intake air flow and consumed in the normal combustion process. The evaporative system includes the following components: *Fuel tank *Evaporative emission canister vent solenoid *Fuel tank pressure sensor *Fuel pipes and hoses *Vapor lines *Fuel cap *Evaporative emission canister *Purge lines *Purge valve solenoid EVAP System Operation: The EVAP purge solenoid valve allows manifold vacuum to purge the canister. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) supplies a ground to energize the EVAP purge solenoid valve (purge on). The EVAP purge solenoid control is Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) or turned on and off several times a second. The EVAP canister purge PWM duty cycle varies according to the operating conditions determined by the mass air flow, the fuel trim, the engine coolant temperature, and the intake air temperature. For certain EVAP tests, the diagnostic will be disabled if the TP angle increases to above 75% . The evaporative leak detection diagnostic strategy is based on applying vacuum to the EVAP system and monitoring for vacuum decay. The fuel level sensor input to the PCM is used to determine if the fuel level in the tank is correct to run the EVAP diagnostic tests. To ensure sufficient volume in the tank to begin the various diagnostic tests, the fuel level must be between 15% and 85% . The PCM monitors the fuel tank pressure/vacuum level via the fuel tank pressure sensor input. Results of Incorrect Operation: Poor idle, stalling and poor driveability can be caused by the following: *Malfunctioning purge solenoid. *Damaged canister. *Hoses/lines split, cracked and/or not connected properly. Evidence of fuel loss or fuel vapor odor can be caused by the following: *Liquid fuel leaking from the fuel lines *Cracked or damaged canister *Inoperative canister control valve Vacuum hoses that are: *Disconnected *Mis-routed *Kinked *Deteriorated *Damaged The evaporative leak detection diagnostic strategy is based on applying vacuum to the EVAP system and monitoring vacuum decay. The PCM monitors vacuum level via the fuel tank pressure sensor input. Any of the above conditions sets DTC P0440. A restricted or blocked EVAP canister vent path is detected by drawing vacuum into the EVAP system. The PCM turns off the EVAP vent solenoid and the EVAP purge solenoid (EVAP vent solenoid Open, EVAP purge PWM 0% ). The PCM monitors the fuel tank pressure sensor input. With the EVAP vent solenoid open, any vacuum in the system should decrease quickly unless the vent is blocked. A blockage is caused by the following conditions: *Faulty EVAP vent solenoid (stuck closed). *Plugged, kinked, or pinched vent hose. *Shorted EVAP vent solenoid driver circuit. *Plugged evaporative canister.
