Knocking or rattling noise on rough ground, steering wander. Jack vehicle up grab the wheel at the top and bottom and try and rock the wheel, if yes ball joint? Then side to side, if yes track rod or steering rack? If movement in all directions suspect wheel bearing.

SOURCE: emissionwiz has asked you to clarify your question

the upper or lower ball joint is bolted into lower control arm or upper control arm
to remove from knuckle possibly has split pin to remove first before undoing nut. leave nut on ball joint (finger loose) but so you cant see any thread from shaft and use ball joint splitter to seperate or hit side of knucle with ball peine hammer to jolt tapper shaft of ball joint loose from knucle(dont hit to of ball joint shaft)then to remove nut you have to lift top arm & or knuckle to get between driveshaft

SOURCE: dont know where the upper and lower ball joints are located

If you turn the steering one way fully, looking behind the front wheel, you will see a pair of ball joints, one above the brakes, and the other below, very close to the wheel.
They are each attatched to a wishbone shaped component. The upper and lower.

SOURCE: i need to know how

It would be a good idea to get the manual for your car as you will need specialised tools to do the job. This will cover the work you need to do. Manuals are often found cheap on ebay or other web sites.

2004 kia optima upper ball joint

You have two options. 1. You can replace the upper control arms which come with the ball joints. Replacing is simple. Remove the nut that holds the ball joint to the knuckle. Seperate the ball joint from the knuckle. Remove the two nuts that hold the control arm to the body. 2. Buy or rent a ball joint press. Remove the control arm as described above. Press out the old ball joint. Press in the new ball joint. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using FixYa.com!

I have recently bought a 350 sl and the 2 month old mot had no report of any problems. i have left it in for a b service and they've informed me that it needs the front ball joints replacing even though it...

It is possible that the ball joints are bad.
Was there any noises, steering, handling problems before this?
The ball joints may not have been properly lubed during preventative maintenance. The rubber boots may have developed a leak, depleting the grease needed for the joint.
In any case, you may get a second opinion at another shop.
Usually you can look at the joints and pry up between the ball joint on the lower arm and the steering knuckle to gauge the play of this joint.
Jack-up and properly support the vehicle on jack-stands.
Engage the emergency brake.
Remove the front tires.
Lock the front wheels by removing the Key from the Ingnition.
Remove the Brake: Calipers and Rotors to gain better sight of the ball joint and lower steering knuckle connection.
Carefully inspect the ball joint seals for tears and leaks of grease.
Using a prying tool, carefully insert it between the ball joint and steering knuckle avoiding tearing/splitting the ball joint rubber seal; and pry up and or down looking for any play.
If there is play, the ball joint is worn and must be replaced immediately.
If there is no play, the shop was "upselling" you something you did not definitely need.
If the Ball Joints appear to be void of grease: Using a grease gun - lubricate the ball joint using the nipple located on the bottom of the ball joint.
Make sure you check both left and right sides.
Let me know if this helped, or if you have additional information or questions. Feel free to contact me at FixYa.com!

Ball joint replacement-2003 Ford Sport Trac

if you dont have a ball joint press and dont know how to use one then dont do it, but if you do its not that bad of a job just jack the truck up under the control arm remove the brake rotor then take the lower ball joint nut off then use a pickle fork to break the ball joint loose then take the axle nut off push the axle out of the bearing and use the ball joint press to remove and replace the ball joint

99 dodge durango needs ball joints

Well if you get an alignment after you put the new ones in you should be alright. As far as these new ball joints they probably just come pre-pressed on the arms and if thats the case then you will have to mess with the coil springs in which case you will need a special tool and you will have to align it all just right or you will have problems later on, i would just stick with the unpressed ball joints also make sure u have something to press them with like a heavy duty vise or a press itself don't use a hammer cause this will damage them.
