Key is on....battery is good....engine won't turn over

I have a 1993 suburban. yesterday i backed it in the driveway and parked it. this morning...the ignition key turns to "on" radio works...lights are good and bright...but when I turn over the key....it will not turn over the engine...I don't even have that audible "click" that you get when you have a dead spot in the starter....

I tried the shifter in both park and neutral....held the key on and "wiggled" the shifter back and forth....still nothing

The battery connection is good....radio, heater, all my instruments etc are all reading fine....as well...my lights are nice and bright...not dim like you would with a bad battery....

Tried boosting it....you never know...still same result...

Checked the ignition fuse....fuse is good

Tried tapping the starter lightly with a wrench....nothing...like I said...the solenoid isn't even engaging....

  • G Doyle May 18, 2009

ok...what does the power distribution box look like....lol...this is
where I fall down...I can handle the basics....and I have several good
buddies that are mechanics...however...it is the Victoria day
holiday...and it is only 0730...none of them will be at home...or even
    out of bed yet....

I really appreciate this help guys....

Black plastic box attached to firewall in front of passenger side glovebox....approx 12" long....shaped like a "t"...has writing on top.....fuel pump relay...junction block...optional relay etc?
fastened onto 3 "studs protruding from firewall and held on with plastic "nuts" that do not require tools to remove?

Inside there I checked 2 fuses...both are good....

    and no anti theft unit.....

  • G Doyle May 18, 2009

I'm confused here.....I left a rating for the guys helping me...and FIXYA has my problem listed as "solved" .....unfortunately...not yet....

can anyone tell me where the start relay is on the '93 GMC Suburban?

    Thanks

  • G Doyle May 18, 2009

"You checked under hood in relay/fuse box?"

yes...there appears to be a relay for the fuel pump and there is a
terminal bar with about 5 connections on it...there is also 2 fuses in
separate fuse holders...1 blade...i "tube" type....both are ok....

I also have a fuse "Panel" under the steering column.....should i be looking in there?

    Motor 1258
going to have to get back to you tomorrow.....today is a national holiday and there is nothing open for me to get parts....I have found 4 or 5 different relays that match your description...both under the dash and there is one under the black plastic box that you mentioned ...but I have no way of testing them until tomorrow

Thanks for all your help....going out to dust off my old bicycle so i can get to work tomorrow...I'll let you know what it is if I get it fixed

    Thanks again

  • G Doyle May 18, 2009

    FIXED!! (well...kinda till tomorrow)

First off i want to thank everyone for their help....it was a pretty frustrating day to say the least....amazing how much we rely on our vehicles isn't it

Well....just wanted to point out that my vehicle doesn't have a start relay....it has a solenoid attached directly to the starter....it was explained how the solenoid works with the starter...but i am sure you guys know that already

On the solenoid there is a thisk red wire and a smaller wire...the smaller wire is attached to a "post" sticking out of the solenoid....welll...I couldn't get my fat melon up in there to see...but I could feel that the post was loose....so i turned a few things sideways and stuck a cedar shim in there and the engine turned over....it will do till i get to work tomorrow and we can put it on the hoist at lunchtime and pull the starter

    Thanks again guys

    Apprecate it

    Ger

P.S. if you ever need to know anything about carpentry...let me know!!

Black box (plastic) usually pretty handy to battery, you should see red (usually) cable from battery running to it. Another thing that came to mind, you don't have anti-theft system on that do you? Sometimes they will cause problems after a dead battery. Try using your key & valet key to unlock the doors, manually especially drivers.

You checked under hood in relay/fuse box?

  • Mike Butler
    Mike Butler May 18, 2009

Yes, wouldn't hurt. Relay should be a little 1" approx. square plug in type usually.

OOOPS! I have to apologize, when you said you tapped the starter, and solenoid never clicked, Like a dummy I assumed you did check for loose wires etc too, which I shouldn't have. You never know how much to push it when asking if they did this & did that, because some people think your calling them dumb by asking those questions, and have got really mad that I did. Sorry about that, could have saved you all that aggravation, but hey, you know your vehicle much better right? (ha-ha.) Glad you got it, but what about all that exercise you'll be missing now? (ha-ha). Worst part of it is, after all these years of doing mechanical work, if I learned nothing else, assuming anything is a Big NO-NO ! Again, sorry, but glad your up & running.

Check your battery connections really good, make sure they are clean. If that checks out o.k. have the battery tested or try to jump start it. If it takes a jump the battery is bad.If that all checks out pull it out of park & put it back in park. You could have a nuetral safety switch mis adjusted or going bad.hope this helps

First step is see the Condition of the oil.
Them you need to see if the ENGINE is NOT LOCKED UP.
To Do that, you will need a Rachet and Socket to Try TURN the CRANKSHAFT pulley by Hand.
If you are ABLE to Rotate,
And the Battery is good, Check all the Connection from the BATTERY to the STarter motor,
And the Ground Cable. From battery To the Chassis and the Bolt at the Transmission.

But if you are Unable to TURN over the Crankshaft Pulley.
The Engine is Locked up.
And will need to take a Opinion of a Mechanic .
To be sure Of the problem and the condition that may affect to the ENGINE went damaged.

My 1993 Buick Park Avenue just Clicks once when you turn the key on starter won't engage the battery is fine

Sounds like a bad starter or a bad battery cable connection to me. If you are certain that tyour battery is in good condition and fully charged, your battery cables are clean and tight and are making good connection on BOTH ends, replace the starter.

I have a 1993 Chevrolet Suburban The engine (new) has been dragging (at times) when starting for a month or so. Now it will not turn over at all, nothing. The battery is good however it only reads 9 volts...

its a possibility that the alternator is shoot, and you do not have the power to turn engine over to start it. if battery is ok ! then get vehicle started. all accessories off, with it running you should have at least 14.2-14.7 voltage at battery. if you do not have a way to check this. auto-zone will check for free, as well as advanced auto.if all is ok, and the voltage running is less the 14 volts. replace alternator. good-day !

After starting sub. can not turn key to off position. Will not shut down. Had to pull ign. fuse and disconnect battery. whats up

Either gear selector is not in park, or the gear lever itself is loose or out of alignment, and the park sensor is not working. If transmission lever is not in park, you cant pull the key out. On most cars, the key will return as far as the I position, shutting off the engine, but not allowing key extraction.

93 GMC Suburban Wont Turn Over

I may not be all the way in park or the safety neutral switch in not working. Did you try and start it in Neutral? Also move your shifter around while the key is engauged and see if it will start.
