Question about 1992 Pontiac Grand Am

1 Answer

I have this weird issue with my 92 pontiac grand am se. it will start fine wheen i leave home i drive a few miles to the store turn off and when i come back in 1/2 hr or so i try to start it but the engine cranks over but it wont start and if i wait 15 - 20 minutes and try and start it then it starts fine. it doesnt do this everytime i go somewhere but it does it more times then not. i have had the throttlemodule replaced, the ignition control module replaced, complete tune up, oil change and it passed smog test also this week with low emissions readings. this problem of sometimes not starting is driving me insane and costing me alot of money. tonight it did this not want to start but the motor cranks over like normal but the starter made a funny noise and acted like it got stuck so i turned the key off then triied to start it right back and the car started right up but kinda acted like it was going to stall as i itook off but then started running like normal. do you have any idea what could be my problem? thanks for any help

You might have trouble on your fuel pump motor or on security system (passkey-II)

1.If the car wont start, kindly check the fuel pressure it should be 41-47 PSI
2. Also check the telltail messege of security system it should on for 3-5 seconds only after ignition on.

Try resetting the ECU. Hold both battery cables together without touching the battery, for 30 seconds. Drive normal the next 10 miles or so, the ECU will relearn all.hope this helps!

If tranny fluid is clear and at normal level, then the issue is with the transmission - it is getting ready to go sayonara.

Better get that fix before you get stranded.

2001 pontiac grand will not start all of a sudden. ran fine this

The problem may be the security issue. Do you see a security light? Dust gets into the ignition tumbler and causes a bad contact with the sensor prompting a false security issue.

I had the same problem and thought it was a fuel pump issue, but after a $500 replacement ordeal, I later encountered the same issue again.

To resolve:
Insert the key and turn on ignition tumbler to ACC on (Position prior to engaging the starter)
Wait around ~15-20 minutes (The security light will change... I believe it will flash when the security reset...it's been a long time...sorry)
Afterward, turn the ignition tumbler and off
Your card should start there after

Tumbler maintain: Blow some compress air to prevent this incident from happening.

Hopefully this will resolve your issue without the need of spending any further $$$!

02 Grand Am SE - Won't start

One of the easier ways to check a fuel pump is to turn the key to the on position and listen by the gas tank. You should hear the fuel pump turn on and then turn off after a couple of seconds when it reaches the proper PSI. If that seems to be working fine, there are a few different things it could be.
