Question about 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer
Do what MrRepairAll says. Sounds like the alternator was bad since it wouldn't recharge the batteries and you were driving on battery power. Check the voltage across the batteries with the wires/poles connected to the battery. You should read 14 to 16 v. An alternator recharges the battery and runs the car electrically. If it still ruins batteries then you have a major short somewhere but I highly doubt that's the problem.
Your A/C may need a recharge. That's the first test. If it needs a compressor then buy a NEW one and a NEW condensor and have your lines blown out. Do it RIGHT if you want your car to last. Ask around to find a cheap mech or look on Craigslist since A/C systems will cost your $1,000 or more.

Run the car, then disconnect the negative pole on the battery, then the positive pole.
If the car keeps running then your new alternator is working properly.
If your car stops then your new alternator is bad.
