LOSEING ANTIFREEZE FROM RESERVOIR

I HAVE A 93 CELICA GT 5SPD THE RESERVOIR RELEASES ALMOST ALL ANTIFREEZE FROM ESCAPE VALVE. IT ALL END UP ON DRIVERS SIDE WHEEL THIS IS AN ONGOING ISSUE. THE THERMOSTAT HAS BEEN REPLACED 2 TIMES AND I JUST ADDED A NEW RADIATOR AND RAD. CAP. I RECENTLY DROVE IT 53 MILES ON AN OPEN FRWY. WHEN I EXITED THE FRWY. AND CAUGHT MY FIRST STOP LIGHT THE GAUGE WENT ALMOST TO RED I STARTED TO MOVE A FEW FEET AND INSTANTLY DROPED TO NORMAL AS I DROVE, IT STAYED NORMAL UNTIL NEXT STOP. I HAVE NEVER HAD A LOSS OF POWER OR POOR OPERATION. ONE THING WHICH I HAVE BEEN TOLD I HAVE THE STOCK CAT AND SOME PREVIOUS IDIOT ADDED A 2ND MAGNAFLOW MIDWAY BACK ON THE EXHAUST. ALSO THE ENGINE RAD. HAS 1 FAN AND TRANY HAS 1 IS THAT RIGHT OR DO I NEED A 2ND ON RAD.

You have to make sure that the coolant fan is operating. If it does not come on at idle or in traffic then you will have an overheat problem. There are a few things that control the fan. Temperature sensor, cooling fan relay, and computer. It could also be the fan itself. Get 2-3 estimates for fixing the problem.

Make sure the rad level is full... only check when cold. I don't mean the plastic reservior. The rad itself. If it is low then there must be a leak somewhere.

  • Moe May 21, 2009

Sounds like you may be getting exhaust into the cooling system. If your rad level is up and your cooling fan works and the thermostat works and the rad cap works then the only problem you have is that the cooling system cannot handle the heat is is getting. If the engine has ever been overheated, you may have a head gasket problem or head itself.

  • Moe May 24, 2009

A plugged exhaust will not overheat the coolant. It will cause poor power when accelerating. Checking for head gasket leakage at your rad shop. It takes a special tool and some chemicals to detect gases in the cooling system.

Check for oil pressure.Check the compression in each cylinder.
Yank the valve cover to see if the camshaft is actually turning during cranking mode, only.
Disable the fuel pump or disable the spark(fuel disable preferred)
The engine may have "eaten" something it shouldn't.
A valve may be broken off inside the cylinder head.
Usually an exhaust valve.

I'm going to guess TIMING BELT. Fairly common with this engine. Thankfully, they are a "NON-interference" motor so it didn't do any damage when the belt snapped. Just need to replace it. Should cost around $300-$400 depending on where you are. Good luck!

Does the clutch use the same resevoir as the brake? My clutch pedal travels almost to the floor before the clutch releases. I'm hopeing it is just low on fluid but don't find the fluid resevoir.

Follow the clutch pedal to the master for the clutch,to the firewall, and locate the clutch master,if it does not have a reservoir, there will be a hose from the master,to the reservoir, just trace it down,it does not share the reservoir with the brake master cylinder.

your going to have to pull back carpet and clean any liquid up and start your truck and watch for original source of leaks, have you removed the plastic cover of the heat work on the drivers side to see if the heater core is leaking and running over to the drivers side.
