Transmission??? I have a 2000 Toyota 4runner SR5 and last week it started to make a metal whining sound almost like something was trying to catch while turning I took it in to Midas and they said it was my rear differential have looking at it again no noise is coming from the back end it sound like it is coming from where the transmission and engine meet. Could it be that my transmission is going out just need to be flushed????

Would that happen when only going 10-25 mph and then the sound stop if I go fast then 25 mph? And the noise has stopped right now and is kinda of running sluggish. would that still be from the starter? Thanks for the help!!!!

IT SOUNDS LKE YOUR STARTER IS NOT DSENGAGING AND THAT COULD WEAR OUT YOUR FLYWHEEL A STARTER IS A CHEAP JOB COMPARED TO A FLYWHEEL I WOULD REMOVE THE STATER AND SEE IF THERE IS ANY EVIDENCE OF IT STAYING ENGAGED. ALSO CHECK YOUR FLYWHEEL AND SEE IF IT IS TORE UP? YOU CAN BENCH TEST YOUR STARTER WITH A 12 VOLT BATTERY CHARGER AND SEE IF THE PLUNGER IS MOVING IN AND OUT CORECTLY. OR YOU CA TAKE IT TO YOUR LOCAL AUTO PARTS STORE AND THEY WILL TEST IT FOR YOU.

If you have someone check the engine computer for trouble codes, you'll probably find a code for the speed sensor in the transmission.

I have a 1997 model Toyota 4runner SR5, which I bought within the last three weeks at 230,000 mile but the fuel consumption is excessive and had been bringing out black smoke from the exhaust pipe

black smoke when driving.(not slowing down)is an indication that the rings are shot.(engine rebuild)exhaust will smell of oil.black smoke on deceleration indicates valves stems worn.(head rebuild)

I have a 1990 toyota 4runner sr5! There is a black and white wire that goes to the starter that has power to it! Half way down this wire there is an encased diode or something and another wire comes up...

Vehicle makes a loud whining sound when starting. sound goes away when vehicle is put into drive.

It could be a loose belt, or bearing in your alternator.
Is this a manual or automatic transmission ?
If it is a manual you may have a through out bearing, going bad, or a pump issue in your transmission.
Please check, and let me know.

Probably due to the wiring and set up you will need the same system.Check the plug for connection and check the buttons fpr feel on the unit as if they feel worn in the functions youre using its probably right that you think its not right ,see if you can try the same unit from another car to help diagnose the issue

Engine does not accelerate as automatic transmission is engaged

Sounds like you have a timing belt issue, it may be off one tooth. This would be expected by the way you describe your symptoms

2000 Toyota 4Runner stalls on idle

On Toyota 3.4 liter V6,there is small vacuum switch call vacuum switching valve (VSV) that may be disconnected air tubes, electrical connector or malfunction.

I will spend one hour to look over the engine from top to bottom to check for bad connections and disconnected vacuum / air tubes.

Are you getting any additional OBD-II code(s)?

Please post it on the comment window.
