Hi, this is typical when the fuel pump is having trouble transferring the fuel through the lines. you may have some injector issues as well. i would take a listen under the hood and do a pulse check. you should here the injectors pulsing in unison when the engine is idling. if they are puling correctly, you should add some fuel system cleaner. the bad filter may have let lots of debris through to the injection system and fuel rail. this will cause a back up in the rail. a good fuel system cleaner will fix this.

The main issue hear is the fuel pump. i recommend replacing this device ASAP. also, check the following devices as well for faults or fouled conditions. replace if needed.

1. inspect the Intake manifold Gaskets. these gaskets may be worn or leaking.
2. Inspect the Fresh Air Intake Hose. this hose may be damaged or clogged.
3. If the check engine light is on, it may be because of a faulty Oxygen sensor. check if this is the case.
4. Inspect the PVC valve and hose. this valve may be plugged or damaged and, the hose could be clogged or it may have collapsed. check this out.
5. inspect the air filter. replace if its visibly dirty or brown.
6. Inspect the wires and plugs for faults. replace if needed.

It might just be a clogged fuel line/injector/ or pump, try to put some fuel cleaner in tank the next time you fill it up and see if that helps

Unfortunately it could be a number of things causing rough idle and hesitation. It sounds like the engine might be confused about how much gas and air it is getting which might mean it needs a new oxygen sensor (EMISSION) or throttle position sensor. Start with the easy maintenance items like spark plug wires, air filter, and fuel filter if they have not been replaced recently. A bad spark plug wire may only occasionally short out and cause these problems. Try looking under the hood in the dark with the engine running and see if you see any electrical arcing around the spark plug wires or just go ahead and replace them if they are old.

Thanks
Kevin

Whenever I get a vehicle in that "sputters" the first things we check is the fuel filter and pressure on the fuel pump. With the 1995 and newer cars the computer will kick out error codes if the oxygen sensors are defective.

Try some SEAFOAM carb / injector cleaner, Just put into the gas tank, and also fill up with some supreme gas. This might clean up your problem.
Oh, what about a tune-up, spark plugs, rotor button, Distributor cap, & plug wires. This should top everrything off to rum smooth.

Check engine light is frequently a loose fuel cap, but the other problem could be a bad fuel pump, or a clogged fuel filter. Try the fuel filter first - its the cheapest.
