Car not pulling right surging plugs look red on top

Hi i have a 1970 chevy monte carlo ok i was driving one day on the freeway and my car felt like it was cutting back when i got about 65 70 i changed my plugs the problem stopped the other day i noticed oil deposits right by my valve covers on my intake manifold so i changed the gaskets i thought my fuel pump might be bad so i replaced it the same problem still is happening that day i drove to the parts store just barely putting my foot on the gas it was pulling like i wanted but by the time i got home it was surging like it would pull for 4 seconds die down pull and die down etc. i tried adjusting my carburator still no luck i just want my car to run right i think it my be a fire problem then again it could be gas what you guys think also i have three relays on the fire wall that are old they might need to be replaced anyone know what they do? also my plugs looked red at the top and theres oil around them and white smoke coming out of the valve covers not the exhaust just when i take of the pcv valve and oil cap help!

  • gagetsrus May 24, 2009

no if i stay under 45 its cool i have changed the distributor, intake gasket, fuel pump, fuel sending unit in the tank blow out the fuel lines bought the carb in feb put i different carb on it still cutting back at the half of mile mark and when i stop at light it cuts off but cranks right back up what else can i do and what is going on

  • gagetsrus May 25, 2009

ok i dont race i said half a mile because if i leave home thats about the time it messes up i have changed everything but the carb i bought it in febuary not at cruising around town but when i get on the high way at about 50 and up it cuts back like its not getting enough gas,yes its a 4 barrell rochester carb. stock intake replaced the gasket wires plugs distributor, fuel pump fuel sending unit in tank everything if i get on it and let off at the time from light to light when i stop it cuts off but if i just cruze it will run all day its not get enough gas i think

  • gagetsrus May 26, 2009

i already changed the filter and fuel pump i did that first seems like its geotten worse since i started trying to fix the problem i have a HEi distributor i even replaced the distributor i think i need to get another carb.

  • gagetsrus May 26, 2009

im thinking the lobe is worn i even put my old pump back on i know im not surpose to be able to  hold my finger over the fuel line to the carb while the car is running am i? but i can i dont think it has enough pressure

  • gagetsrus May 27, 2009

what rubber plug in the flow back valve? Is this in the fuel filter houseing i rebuilt my carb today changed all the gaskets runs stonger on take off which is bad cause it starves for gas sooner

  • gagetsrus May 27, 2009

how do i add an electric pump?

  • gagetsrus May 29, 2009

my mechanic said he dont think its a gas problem he took the top of the carb said it looked good changed the coil still the same he's lost like i was but im thinking its the fuel pump lobes i think i need a electric pump i have exel wires acdelco plugs what else can it be help please!!!!!! my car runs about half a mile starts cutting back if i press down alot on the gas it keeps picking up speed but i still feell it cutting back when i slow down to turn or come to a stop it turns cuts off i put it in nuetral it cranks right back up i have changed everything involving the gas and fire accept the carb and putting on a electric pump what could it possibly be!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • gagetsrus May 30, 2009

it keeps runing like picking up speed but i can still feel it cutting back and sputtering im not sure what a egr are valve is and where its located? when it dies it cranks right back up no problem im not sure what the timing is set at yeah it was kind of old carb but it did the same thing ran for about a mile started cutting back and cut of at the light

  • gagetsrus May 30, 2009

yeah i dont have a egr valve on my car i got accel wires i just bought them a month ago yes i have powerbraked but my car aint cut off or nothin

  • gagetsrus May 30, 2009

no no change in ideal its a slight vaccum enough to **** my finger at ideal from the hose that connects to the distributor

  • gagetsrus May 30, 2009

do any of you guys have a number so i can talk to you direct? i really need the help

  • gagetsrus May 30, 2009

nah it doesnt back fire and no i dont have a catalytic converter its a 1970 monte carlo headers flow master exhaust seems like its starving for gas then again seems like its miss firing and cuttin back  i dont want to waste more money on a electric pump if its starving for gas it would fire right back up would it and it wasnt cutting off until i took it to the shop and they put another intake gasket on it

  • gagetsrus May 31, 2009

could it be my ignition module?

  • gagetsrus May 31, 2009

could some wires at the fire wall be touching

  • gagetsrus Jun 01, 2009

no i had the problem with the cutting back before it just wasnt cuttibg off when i stopped until i replaced the gasket could be something the so called mechanic did also

  • gagetsrus Jun 01, 2009

but this makes no sence to me my car is sitting in a shop and nothing the mechanic there doesnt know what to do im just about to go get my car and do it myself put the electric pump on it and but a carb and see what happens

What kind of carburetor are you running? Stock 4 bbl, rochester? How long has it been since it was cleaned. How about the fuel filter in the inlet.

It sounds like a fuel problem. Does it seam like it only happens after the car warms up?

Can you elaborate a little on your post. It doesn't do it under 45 mph? Also, It is cutting out at (The Half Mile Mark) what is this ? Drag Race? It dies at stop? Is it running rough when it dies? To get it to fire back up do you have to hold the gas down? What kind of Carb? Rochester? Stock intake? How many degrees of timing are you running? Don't worry this has a logical explanation and I will help you figure it out.

O.K. you likely did this but it is cheap and I would do it again anyways, Change the fuel filter in the inlet of the carburetor. Also what kind of ignition are you running? Points or HEI?

This might sound weird but change the filter again but before you put it in pull out the rubber plug in the end of it that has the flow back valve in it and throw it over your shoulder. The only other thing I could suggest is to hook a fuel pressure gauge to it. Your mechanical pump when running should be about 5 psi. You have a new pump, but it could be bad or the lobe for the pump might be worn on the camshaft.

The rubber plug is stuck in the end of the filter.

You could add in an electric fuel pump.

  • Clint Smock
    Clint Smock May 27, 2009

Go to the parts store and tell them you need an electric pump for a carbureted car. 5-7 Psi. and a fuel pump block off plate. Remove your pump and install the plate. Find a good place to mount the pump under the hood. Run the lines to it and run a ground to the pump. Then run the power wire to a power source that is only hot in the run position.

If it dies at stops but fires right back up, its not the fuel pump. It runs rough or slow at stops? You adjusted the idle? What do you have the idle speed set at. When it dies it starts right back up or you have to crank it for a while? Did you ever tell me what you have the timing set at? You said you tried a different carb with no change?

Does this vehicle have an EGR valve?

  • Clint Smock
    Clint Smock May 30, 2009

When it runs bad going down the road, what does it do if you floor it?

  • Clint Smock
    Clint Smock May 30, 2009

EGR would be a vacuum valve on the intake should be on the passenger side behind the carb. The edge of it would be hanging slightly over the passenger side valve cover. Just enough that you would have to remove it to remove the valve cover. It has a vacuum line going to the top of it. I'm leaning toward either a bad EGR (if it has one) or plug wires or coil. Do you know how to power brake your vehicle to load the ignition and test the plug wires?

  • Clint Smock
    Clint Smock May 30, 2009

Does the engine speed change when you pull the vac line off the distributor with the engine idling? Do you have vacuum at the distributor at idle? There shouldn't be. The vehicle doesn't have a catalytic converter does it?

When you goose the throttle wide open in park, does it pop in the carb or backfire?

It isn't a common ignition module problem. I thought you tried replacing the distributor and it didn't change the problem? But it could be the module. Usually a bad module will cause the vehicle to die and not restart until it cools off.

What wires? Plug wires? Give me a call tomorrow around 7:00 CST. Did you say this all started after you had the intake gaskets replaced? 309-299-8783

Chevy monte carlo 3.4l replaced thermostat and water pump, thought i bled it right but ran good for two days now running hot again, no heat coming out of blowers, right after i fixed it heater worked good,...

Was the water pump leaking? did you overheat the engine? you may have head gasket issues. If you can bleed th eair out and it works ok a few days, then it has air in it again, most likely you have a bad head gasket.

2001 chevy monte carlo is overheating when driving

Hi;
If your engine cools down when moving fast, you either have a problem with your water pump or your electric fans that cool off your radiator and a/c condenser. This is controlled by a temperature switch, but these fans should kick on instantly when A/C is selected.
