Replace throttle body gasket. first check to see if carbon has built up around the throttle valves in throttle body if so remove and clean it with throttle body cleaner.and a old tooth brush. besure to remove all electrical components or any thing that plastic or rubber the cleaner will destroy it.

MY 94 CADILLAC SEVILLE SLS IS IDLEING HIGH. I JUST REPLACED THE STARTER PUT IT BACK TOGETHER THE STARTER IS WORKING NOW BUT NOW MY CAR IS IDLE IS HIGH, I DON'T KNOW HOW TO LOWER THE IDLE CAN YOU HELP

I am assuming a Northstar engine. Car idle is in no way connected to the starter - you have probably disturbed something else nearby. Since the starter is close to the throttle body, check the TPS, IAC motor and for a sticking throttle linkage - they all can cause idling problems. By the way, there is no user idle adjustment - all controlled by the engine computer.

350 V8..revs itself and idles at higher rpm..tap excelerator and goes down to normal

if it is a carby engine then check the settings of the automatcic choke and the throttle cam screw settings
it works in a manner so that when you press on the accelerator the automatic choke flips a cam around and the idle speed screw rests on that cam giving a high idle speed until the engine is hot enough not to need a choke at which point the cam is held clear of the idle screw
if efi engine run the fault codes to check for problem accelerator position sensor or throttle position sensor.

High idling engine

Year, make and model, please. How can it idle if you are cranking?

Idle high in park

May either be a sticky throttle linkage requiring lubrication, or the TPS (throttle position sensor).

Mercury cougar idle

Run fault codes and look far a problem in the MAP/MAF sensors. Check and clean the air filter.

What causes my 1993 Mercury Cougar to idle too high? RPM are idling too high.

Throttle position sensor may be at fault or the throttle body may need cleaning. If so equiped, the egr valve could be at fault.

The 1993 mercury cougar sounds like its idled too high...The idle screw was checked but that wasn't the problem. What could it be?

Check your intake manifold gasket for leaks. You do this by running the engine and using a squirt bottle of water. Try to reuse an old windex or similar bottle that streams as well as sprays.

The idea is to have the engine inhale the water at the gasket seams. This will make the engine miss or stall and you will know where the leak is. The faster idle is due to the engine getting more air than the throttle opening is set for.

If you do not find any leaks at the intake manifold, use the spray setting and follow the vacuum lines to the components they are plugged into. Spray the components and vacuum lines to find cracked lines or cracked components that are venting vacuum.

If everything is sealed then go to Autozone or Oreillys and get a free scan on your car. They can tell you how fast your car is idling with a second gauge. Sometimes a throttle position sensor can be bad and cause this problem.
