Most likely solution is the gear selector fork in the transmission has broken and is no longer engaging the gears.
Repair requires transmission removal and partial overhaul.

The fuel light has nothing to do with the transmission. Try putting $10 in gas and see if the fuel light is on. You may have a bad float. The gear shifting problem may be a bad output speed sensor on the transmission. I had a similar problem and after replacing the output seed sensor my truck shifts like new. I hope this helps. The part only cost $23.30.
