Question about 1996 Chevrolet Lumina Mini
Engine is a 3.1 L with 94,000 miles and today while driving the 'service engine soon' light comes on. Also at idle it seems to be skipping or missing. The plugs are fine but I'm wondering if it may be the fuel I use because it's cheap and times are difficult right now. Which also means I can't afford a mechanic, but helpful suggestions are appreciated.
If you know the plugs are fine then an ignition wire or a coil will cause the same symptom . If you had a code reader it would show you which cylinder is causing the miss. Beyond that a compresion test is needed.

Bad coil they breakdown when the engine get hot. There is 3 coils total when it starts missing start pulling plu wires until you find the one that is not firing

Fuel pump is most likely the cause. Probably just barely making the required pressure to start. Needs to maintain 60-66 psi while cranking to start.

need to pull plugs and crank over in morning and see if water blows out of any plug holes. Sounds like water in cyclender.

A tune up will not cure the lean code, in fact an engine miss gives a rich code from the unburned fuel. I would suggest u verify u have no vacuum leaks, also clean the inside of the MAF sensor if so equipped and replaced the bank two O2 sensor, that is the passenger side sensor before the catalytic converter. If u have the money replace both right and left sensors, it is better to do them in pairs.

When the light comes on without flashing, it just means an emissions problem, when it starts to flash it has become more serious. I suspect that there was an error putting the plugs and or wires. That computer can determine if there is a misfire and it will put out a P040X, code where X represents which cylinder is the problem. This will help you not have to take each one apart. If there are more than one, check each number.
Ex. P0401 means there is misfire on cylinder number 1
P0400 is a random misfire detected.
If you take it to an Advance or Autozone they will usually scan if for free.
By the way, if you used cheap plugs instead of platinum plugs that could do it too.
Hope this helps.
