DANGER CLOSE !!! Call of duty....
stop , backup, and do nothing, spark + hydrogen gas = BOOM.
now say what you were doing, my guess, JUMPER CABLE USAGE.
did you read the book on how to use cables.
No, this is not random chance... at all..
1 cars not touching,,,,, (bumpers kissing no)
2 Red Plus lug to Plus lug , or blow electronics to H3LL!! $$$$$$$$$$
3: on dead car connect battery minus lug (black) to jumper cable clip.
4: connect the jumper (last black) wire to the good cars, metal.
find strong metal connection ,not battery. (it can and will spark)
this prevents the BOOM acid in face deal.
5: start good car
6: wait 1 or 2 min, to allow dead battery to wake up a bit.
7: now crank dead car.

car starts
i then off the metal jumper end first, then other minus
then either and both PLUS clips.

the spark is due to one battery charging the other, normal
the trick is to make said spark in a safe place far from any batteries.

My car starts with a jump but not on its own ,batteries good alternator good?

Jump start only adds extra speed to starter and provides extra amps, so think bad coil or module. Check for nice blue fat spark at plugs when not jumped and compare when jumped.

QUESTION: Without a jump, does the motor crank when you turn the key to "START"?

...

If you can jump start it, then you know you have spark, fuel and compression; you know your starter and ignition are fine.

My guess is a loose/missing connection at the positive battery terminal for your starter.

Cranks won't start

First you must check to see if engine is mechanical sound by performing a compression test. remove the spark plugs install a compression gauge in the spark plug hole and crank engine about 4 cycles compare readings to all cylinders reading should be around 125-150 psi readings in the 50 psi range possible jumped or broken timing belt. If engine is mechanically sound test for spark at the spark plugs use a spark plug laid against valve cover and have some one crank it over look for the spark to jump the gap. A no spark problem is internal in the distributor.

Tried to jump my 2003 galant and the cables would spark when trying to connect negative

Be ceratin you have jumper cables to correct terminals. Also, you may connect both jumper cables to the battery of the car your getting power from (be certain not to let other ends of cables touch) connect the positive lead of car being jumped to the battery's positive terminal, then connect the negative lead to the cars ground, not directly to the negative on the battery. Getting a spark when jumping is very common. You do not want to create the spark at the battery because the fumes from the battery acid can be explosive...... That can go very bad! When removing remove the grounded, to the jumped car, and then carefully remove the rest. Again be certain to not let the leads touch.

Please let me know if this had assited you,

Thanks,
Tom

Hi there, I have a 99' Mustage and I couldn't get it to start, so I tried to jump it that didn't work. There was a spark that came from the positve post when I tried to jump it and know I can't even get...

Try taking the cables off your battery and re-installing new ones. Or try adjusting the ones you have and tighten them real good. It sounds like it's sparking due to a loose cable. If the battery is completely dead it will do the same thing. So two choices, try the cables and then check your battery to see if it is good.

Car wont run.

Does it crank well and all that but with no spark or is the battery just dead? If the battery is dead, it either won't charge while alternator is spinning or the alternator doesn't charge well enough to keep the battery charged well. If it jumps and runs indefinitely, battery is done. If it jumps and dies, alternator is done. If battery and alternator are fine, and you have no spark, you may need a new coil, new spark plug wires if they are worn out and too resistant, pick up coil inside of distributor, or you may have some other ignition system issue.

Most times when an alternator fails, it starts charging less and less till the car won't keep running or it won't start the next time. If the alternator hasn't failed, the battery needs replacing. If your battery is 5 or more years old this is a very good possibility. If your alternator failed and you have killed your battery many times before replace them both. Each time you drain a battery to dead you lose about 10% of its current capacity.

If the battery is fine and engine will not turn, starter may need replacing. Hope I helped.

Check to see if you have spark at the coil. If you have spark at the coil and no spark at the plug, you probably have a bad distributor cap and/or rotor.

If there is no spark at the coil, you need to find out if there is voltage present at the B+ terminal of the coil.
No B+ could be anything from a bad ASD relay to a broken wire or burned fusible link.

If B+ voltage is present at the coil, the "NO-SPARK" condition could be caused by anything from a bad Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) to a bad Ignition Control Module (ICM) To a bad Electronic Control Unit ((ECU) - AKA Engine Control Module)

It sounds like your battery was so far gone that it's going to take it being actually charged up rather than jumped at this point.
