If the radiator is full of water then the water pump could be bad. Most water pumps have a "weep" hole under the bottom that starts dripping when the water pump needs replacing. Can you tell where the whining is coming from? Start the engine and place something like a 3 to 5 foot long cut off wooden broom handle or something similar on the water pump (if you can access it and stay clear of moving parts) put the other end of the wooden rod to your ear and it will amplify the sound. You may be able to pinpoint where the whining is coming from like this.

HEATING ISSUES

One way to tell a bad thermostat in a car is if the car overheats frequently even if there is water in the radiator.Stuck open - no heat from heater, temp gauge hardly moves off of cold.
Stuck closed - overheats engine, temp gauge quickly climbs to hot.listen for any rubbing, grinding, or whining noises from the pump. look under water pump while running, if pump is going bad. water will come out of weep hole on the bottom of the pump. good-day!

Heat stops working and engine overheats

When your Pathfinder overheated you now have a blown engine head & gasket. When it overheats you run into costly problems that make your vehicle only worth scrape. You do know that using your a/c or heater puts strain on engine and could have leak at freeze plug or plugs and slowly leaking water from radiator or water backing into overflow that has it boiling with steam coming out.
