1996 pathfinder, ignition issue, starter , battery , ignition tested, will start 100 times, then just won't, then start right up! And keep starting. Last time had it towed home, started right up.Help!

If the Pathfinder is a manual trans. Your clutch safety switch needs to be adjusted. if it is automatic, then neutral safety switch is the problem. Try shifting from Park to Neutral position on the gear selector and try starting. Check for low voltage at the starter solenoid (small Black Wire with White stripe ) You have to unbolt the right motor mount and jack the engine up to remove the starter. test so that starter is last resort. Hit me up at and I can tell you how to test the starter.

How can I test for a defective starter?

The most conclusive way to test your starter is to remove it from the vehicle and simply test functionality with a 12V battery. Typically there are three points on the starter case were wires are attached you can use a screwdriver with the starter on the vehicle to jump the points and listen for the starter to activate, however this is inclusive because you cannot see what is happening. With the starter off the vehicle you can use your cars battery to test the starter(you will need test leads or jumper cables and a screwdriver). Attach the lead from the negative battery post to anywhere on the starters case to ground the circuit. Now attach the positive lead to large positive wiring point on the starter, now it is supplied with power. When you turn you ignition a second 12V signal is ent to the starter to activate it, to simulate this TOUCH an additional posative lead to the activtion post on the starter, if you do not have leads use a screwdriver to bridge the gap. Your starter solenoid should come out and the starter should spin forcefully, if it does not function or spins weakly replace it. New Battery/starter and still wont crank.

car wont crank or car wont start? I would say your battery cables are bad,, acid gets in from battery and erodes internal cable parts... need a Meter to check it out.. put the meter on battery while someone tries to start it, if the voltage drops from 13.5 to 10 then it is trying to turn over, I always have the new starters tester before I leave a store, they are remanufactured in Malaysa and they use old parts in most of them..

1996 Ford Taurus LX wagon. 3.0L 24v Duratec. Stalled leaving red light then no power at all. Towed home. Starter tests passed at home by manually putting power from B+ to 's' clip on starter. Starter also...

I would look at the positive cable at the battery and at the starter. Pull the cabel off and a continuity test to see if the wire has a internal break if the wire gets even a pinhole it can build corrosion on the inside of the wire and when a current is put through it it seperates (from the resistance and arc from corrosion) causing the wire to seperate internaly.

Hope this will get you started!

Remove the starter and jump the connections to a Battery to see if it spins. Make sure you connect positive to the positve end and the neg to the neg end. Hope this helps.

My 1993 Nissan truck will not start. I hear a faint clicking sound, but the starter will not turn over.

Sounds like the starter, starter solenoid maybe. If you pull out the old one you can either test it at home or take it to Autozone. They will test it for free.
