misfire happens because there is still fuel not burned in the cylinder so when its pushed out its burned in exhaust tube because the heat thats why you hear these small explosions. this caused if your sparking pluge not firing well . or there is a leak in the intake valve . in your case i advice you to check your sparking plug . if this helped pls vooote

A misfire doesn't always have to be ignition... it's just the most common cause. Faulty or plugged injector, low compression. You need to check fuel pressure and test the fuel injector flow. Then check compression. If you don't have tools for these tests, take it to someone who does. Testing is much cheaper than throwing parts at the problem.

WHEN I GIVE IT GAS IT START TO MISFIRE

Misfires are caused by one of 3 things-gas, spark, or compression-one of those is the problem. For gas, check the fuel pressure and see if it is at the right pressure for your car. Low fuel pressure will cause misfires. If pressure is good, it could still be an injector problem, like a clogged injector. If low pressure, suspect the fuel pump or the fuel filter.
For an ignition spark problem, check your spark plugs. Pull them out and inspect them for broken or cracked plugs, check the spark plug gap, check for oil fouled plugs. You may be able to isolate the misfire to a cylinder or two by the plugs condition. A misfiring plug or cylinder should show more black, sooty deposits than the other plugs. A normal firing plug will have a tan or brown colored insulator on the end with very little deposits. If the plugs are okay, clean them a bit if needed, and check for spark on the spark plug wire ends with engine cranking. Buy an inexpensive spark tester, or hold each spark plug wire metal end terminal 1/4 inch from a ground on the engine block, while cranking the engine. Wear a heavy glove to avoid getting shocked. Check that every cylinder is getting a strong blue spark to eliminate ignition as a problem. A weak, yellow or orange spark is an ignition problem, possibly a bad coil, or other ignition part.

If spark and gas is good, you may need to check engine compression. Any cylinder that has significantly lower compression than the other cylinders will cause a misfire, and set a misfire code. You should check for any trouble codes in the engine computer. A code reader or scanner would have to be connected to the diagnostic connector under the dash. What is "significantly lower" compression? About 15-20% less compression. Say you checked and had 150 psi compression in most cylinders. If one had 20% lower compression ( 150 X 20%= 30 psi, 150 -30 =120 psi, or same as saying 150 X 80%= 120 psi.), a condition like that can cause a misfire. I hope I have made sense here. Good luck, and post back what you find, or if any questions.

use a better quality HT lead with a long insulator would be a start but it would be best to replace the corroded housing

Hyndia Santro 2000 check engine light is continuously ON. Please he

First, have your ignition timing checked. Have also your EGR checked. if this (EGR) is not functioning properly, engine will lose power. If your engines has a distributor, checked for cracked cap, excessive play in the distributor shaft, and other damaged components. You may want also have your ignition unit and coil checked. Don't forget to inspect the spark plug cables.
For the high idling speed, have it adjusted to specification and look for sticking throttle linkage.

Hey guys i have a 2000 intrepid with a used engine just put in. at high rev the check engine light flickers then goes off. Took a trip to West Linn OR from Weiser ID, on the way back the check engine light...

Dysturbedr1,
In a word, NO- don't worry about the gel. There are 2 different kinds of "goop" that is sold for installing new plugs- one is to lubricate the spark plug threads, and the other (which I think you are calling the "gel") is to lubricate the boot and direct fire coilpacks. These are for making it easier to install and replace your plugs and coilpacks....nothing more.
The flickering check engine light is indicative of a misfire condition, which makes sense since your codes said the same thing. The most common cause for this is using a non-premium grade of gasoline or a gas with a high ethanol content (very common in the Mid-West) in a high compression engine such as yours. I had a 2001 Subaru with a high compression 3.0L 6 cylinder engine that did the exact same thing.... it ran fine, but a lower grade of gas would cause a "misfire" code. This is because lower grades of gas burn hotter and the piezo sensors in your engine are very sensitive- the explosion that takes place in a cylinder is much more pronounced with a lower grade gas to the sensor, even though it sounds fine to human ears.
Fill your car with permium, then go back to autozone and have them clear the codes. You will probably not have it happen again unless you go back to a lower gas grade.... and stay away from the Idaho Gasahol!

Good Luck, and Thank You for using FixYa!

Misfires is associated to lean mixture, lets say if the spark plugs are not good, wires/coil on plugs cracked, vacume leak, resticted fuel filter, choked catlic converter.

They are still looking for a cause because it isnt misfiring right now or because they cant find the cause of the stored misfire codes ?
If it is misfiring right now and they cant figure it out then perhaps you should find new mechanics !
I have seen a lot of bad coils on the PT.
Misfire is usually caused by spark plug wires first, spark plugs 2nd, and coil third.
If it isnt misfiring now, spray down the wires with water. If it misfires after that replace the spark plug wires and spark plugs and try again.
If it still misfires then the problem will likely be the coil.
